Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Now that Yooka Laylee is essentially a critical failure... this is good time for Banjo Three!

Many old platformers were way overrated back when they were released, their potential sequels will get tarnished by the critics just like Yooka Laylee

While I agree, yooka laylee it's basically still a 64 platformer with prettier graphics. Gaming has changed. The game should have evolved with it. There are still successful platformers out there. Gameplay in banjo threeie.. Threie... Threey... Has to be modernised but not to the point of losing it's soul. A difficult task.

I think the main takeaway from the reviews is the core gameplay itself isn't what turned critics off, I heard more complaints about the overall game. Such as technical issues, too long, bad camera, boring mini games, some bad level design, etc.

Frankly this isn't uncommon. I've played a lot of games over the years that were fun to a point and just get really boring for various reasons.

I don't buy the narative its too much like an N64 game to be enjoyable. It sounds like Yooka Laylee was overall just poorly designed.

When it comes to Rare platformers, I agree. They were over rated even when they released.

But again, I believe there are valid criticisms being made about Yooka Laylee that drag down any game. Not just this style of game.

You got it the other way around. If anything Microsoft will see it as one more proof that people don't want these games anymore.

That, 100% agree ^

This is kinda why I'm kinda leery on these indie games ... they generally usually don't turn out that great or are 7/10 type games. You need the backing of a bigger studio especially for 3D games to have the proper staff and budget with oversight to make a really great game.

What about Mutant Mudds, Castle Crashers, Cave Story, Binding of Isaac, shovel knight, monument valley, and so many great indies?

I just think the huge indies are the ones we'll need to be careful with. Seems like they lose direction

I don't think a game that has flaws like Yooka Laylee is reflective of how people feel about this style of game as a whole.

I'm also under the illusion developers can learn what people enjoyed and did not.

This is my feeling, too often studios move in a direction of what people were actually asking for.

It doesn't just happen with indie games either. Sadly on few occasions do they turn out as great as Banjo:N&B.

"Now that Yooka Laylee is essentially a critical failure... this is good time for Banjo Three!"

The issue is these things need to be done right, or its going to fail.
Ratchet and Clank did good but they put alot of work into that.

If MS does a new Banjo, they need to make sure quality wise its up to snuff.
Playtonic alone might be too small to take on such a project.

Why should it be a critical failure, 7 is a good score. The only review score that really counts is the user score made by the backers. And all Rare games were delayed multiple times by Nintendo to improve the quality, because resources were unlimited. If MS funds the game if will get an even lower score because it will have to be rushed.

And I don't think the old plattformers were overrated, games like Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie they are still among the best games I played in my entire life.

Sometimes... I don't even know what you guys do on forum.

Ori and the Blind Forest was rushed as well I guess.

I never thought Banjo Kazooie was as good as people hyped it. Hell, I didn't hear much acclaim for the series until Jontron, Peanut Butter Gamer, and similar such Youtubers acted like it was the ultimate hidden gem of the N64
