Forums - Gaming Discussion - How the heck did Sony manage to retake the console market again?

"How?"

Is that a joke? Sony has been at the top for over 20 years.

Why do young Americans EVER assume Xbox was #1? XD

Yeah, we all know why Insomniac chose MS over Sony for Sunset. That doesn't change anything I said. Insomniac was still a great 2nd party partner for Microsoft.

Actually insomniac is not a Microsoft second party. microsoft was merely second choice because Sony wanted the ip. Insomniac can do whatever they want with sunset overdrive. If ms wants a sequel they would have to ask them. They are still making Spider-Man for Sony and released ratchet and clank. In conclusion, Microsoft got a taste of what Sony has been used to for generations now because they got greedy and in truth it's a breath of fresh air on the ms platform.

Actually yes, Insomniac is a 2nd party partner this gen. They partnered together for a game Microsoft funded and published, called Sunset Overdrive. It's a great game, thus they have been a great partner for MS this gen. But do feel free to reply a third time reminding us that Sony could have had the game first if they didn't demand the IP, or that Insomniac still makes games for Sony. Again, none of that changes anything I said. Is it possible for you to reply on this matter with something that doesn't come off as PR for Sony? Who cares about Ratchet or SpiderMan, lol.

People forgot one thing.

Sony never lost a lot of the markets, it kept on winning PS2, 3 and now 4.

In certain countries, Sony is the only home console being bought in numbers, Xbox 360 basically only sold in the UK and US, check the numbers on the other EU countries and Japan, and you quickly realize that Sony did not come back, it never left the podium for non casual console players...

A lot more people than who cared about SO, I can tell you that.  And the way you talk, you would think Insomniac has had this long relationship with MS.  "Have been a great partner for MS this gen."  You mean for like a year, and then they realised their games don't sell on XBO, so are now back with Sony.  Unless you can point me to another game they are making with/for MS.

Nintendo has pretty much given up (I think Switch will be their last console) and Microsoft doesn't even know why they have XBox in the first place.

It's not that bad... Also, exclusives genuinely do not matter *cough**cough*Wii U...

Exclusives don't matter without multiplatform, and vice versa.

Wii U: Great exclusives, nonexistent multiplatform. 14.1% Market Share

Xbox One: Great multiplatform, nonexistent exclusives. 29.2% Market Share

PlayStation 4: Great multiplatform, great exclusives. 56.8% Market Share

Well, when you have a bit of everything, you will always win...

The Wii was on top during the 7th gen.

Which has absolutely zero to do with the thread or the conversation we were having that you quoted. So again, who cares.

I'll give you an example of a second party. Second party is a (generally) dedicated independent developer that runs outside of a first party brand but it's published and works on ips exclusively for said company by contract . For Microsoft this is Remedy studios. Insomniac has made exclusives for Sony since the ps2 era and they still are. In the case of a contract to be made with microsoft to be considered second party Microsoft would have to own the ip. The work was done through third party publishing. Sony has plenty of games so really they could afford to lose it. Sony builds high profile ips every gen. That and just how they do business with gaming. You win some and you lose some. Another example of third party publishing was when Microsoft published mass effect to come to console their exclusively alongside PC. Who care about ratchet and Spider-Man? Those are called examples of insomniacs loyalty to Sony as a second party developer. Again... this is the same relationship Microsoft has with Remedy and they own the ip to remedys last game. mistwalker has worked second party for Nintendo and ms. This is how it works. Gears of war was a third party exclusive until Microsoft purchased the ip. Now all the games are first party.
