Just saw this today at reddit, the recent NEO Turf has an option to play vertically! It reminded me of the DS VC that was possible on the WiiU, it had various viewing options for the dual-screen setup.

There is no reason why the Switch couldn't play DS/3DS games. If the game needs touch capabilities badly, Nintendo could just say that "playing undocked is the recommended form to play this software" or something like that. Plus, there are TONS of DS/3DS games, I'm sure Nintendo will try to use it for its VC.

We already have the Voez precedent at launch, which is only playable in handheld mode.

They just need to sell us a retro DS vertical clip-on for the joy-cons plus a capacitive stylus.

With the screen being flatter than the gamepad, it should be easier to hold if you aren't using the joy-cons

Yes, that's very convinient, only if you set it up like that or have a rotating stand ;)

On the other hand, it's easy to do with a portable like the Switch.
