Forums - Gaming Discussion - How Often Does Your #1 Game Change?

Tagged games:

Hello Squids and Kids.

I was wondering: how often do you switch up your number one game? Have you had a #1 for years and years? Are you constantly re-evaluating? Does a new amazing game dethrone the #1 game every few years?

I ask because with Breath of the Wild out I'm now rethinking my top ten rankings. I think I made my first list around 2005, with Ocarina in the #1 slot. I flirted with giving top honors to Halo: Combat Evolved and Deus Ex, in 2008 and 2012 respectively. Both had to settle for second place. Now, in 2017, I'm in a similar situation.

So, what about you? What's the timeline of your #1 game?

Hasn't changed since 2001 and the first time I played Final Fantasy IX. In general my top 3 has been pretty much set in stone for the last 16 years, while the rest of my top ten changes from time to time.

It doesn't at all, no matter how good a game is, it can't beat the nostalgia.

Hard to tell since I made my first list last year. My #1 was A Link Between Worlds, which I played last year as well. Before that, I would say my #1 was Pokemon SoulSilver (which is now 2nd), so it hasn't changed at all since 2010, when SoulSilver came out. BotW might be Top 5 for me, so it won't change this year.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Hardly ever. Aging and nostalgia has a lot to do so a new game would not make it to the list of my favs that easily, much less detrone my #1.

Tho I divide my preferences now. As in Ni No Kuni or God of War 3 would be amongst my favorites of the PS3 era, but not amongst my favorites overall.

Not at all, played Dark Cloud 2 around 2005 and nothing has come close to it for me.

The problem with my #1 is that it cycles through the few games that I truly feel like they all deserve that spot. So depending on my mood, the day you ask me or what I'm itching to play it might change on the spot, though those cycle of games have remained almost unchanged for some years now, with the only change of The Talos Principle being added in 2015.

I'm pretty indecise to put just one above the rest. I think it's just that I make a re-evaluation everytime the question is asked, because of several factors. This being said, I played both Final Fantasy VIII and The curse of Monkey Island as a kid and they still remain in that cycle of mine to this day, so they deserve especial mention. But even between these two I wouldn't know which one to pick.

I am sure it changed around a few times prior to 1994. Since then though it has remained the same, FFVI.

Great game. That's in my top 5 :)

Before I owned any consoles and just played at friends' houses it was Smash Bros. Melee. In 2004 my parents bought me a Gamecube and my #1 became Star Wars Rogue Leader. In 2007 it became Twilight Princess. And in 2011 it became Skyward Sword, which has remained my #1 ever since. BOTW or Mario Odessey could become the new #1 but I'll need a lot more time to even say that about BOTW.

When I only had exposure to around 5-10 games it was easy for a new game to come along and be better than what I had played before. The more games I played, the less likely it became that a new game would be better than the best I'd played up until that point.
