Forums - Gaming Discussion - Weapon Durability, Fanbase Fragility (The Jimquisition)

if weapon durabillity is too annoying for you in BotW 5 hours in you need to start becoming a better player.

And he knew very well what would happen when he gave Zelda 7/10.

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

I agree with him. I don't mind weapons breaking as much in Dark Souls because they are actually quite durable and even if you do break it, it doesn't shatter. You just have to bring it to someone who can repair it. It really takes away the excitement of getting new weapons in BOTW. Like Ive found a really cool fire blade, but I don't want it to break because its the only one like it Ive seen in my many hours of playing the game. So now it just takes up space in my inventory. Its not game breaking, but people shouldn't defend it. If they do then the next Zelda will have swords made of glass as well.

I don't prefer these sort of systems but I've found that I actually enjoy them less when I attempt to do what you're doing "saving weapons".  I started caring a lot less about this sytem once I didn't care about it and just used whatever I wanted. Like Dying LIght had a similar system and I just used whatever I wanted when I wanted an I didn't care. I just worried about playing the game and using what I wanted when I wanted. When you do that you tend to care a lot less about this sort of stuff.

It's one of those you have to play to know. Watchig, I thought same. First 10 hours, I also thought same. Now, I love it. Heck, I am happy at times when I see it say badly damaged on weapon.

1. It will free up an inventory space for a possible weapon in future I will really want and then won't have to drop something I still like.

2. If I'm fighting something decent, I know that when the weapon breaks it does extra damage, and even more damage if I throw it.

But usually any enemy that takes more than one weapon to deal with, you find that many or more weapons on him that are at least as good if not better. They only difference is, they are different. So your fire sword and lightning great sword might have broke, but you just found a amazing lightning lance and a sweet ice sword.

Yeah i understand, i will still play the game (obviously) and make a more solid opinion from that.

But i got 2 questions

1) in average how many hits does a weapon take before breaking? because i just saw him go through quite a few just fighting some enemies

2) Can you reapair all broken weapons? because im the type that likes to collect and if cool equipmet breaks and cant be repaired then i can see myself (just like Jim) probably never using some of those for fear of losing them.

Wait, so Zelda weapons break or wear off, ok, but can't you fix them?
It only have a degrade system and not a repair system?

No repair system at all.

There are a handful of "Unique Weapons" that I won't spoil (Master Sword obviously) that are fixable. Or you actually just have someone make you a new one. But they are unique in that you can not find them in the wild. Or only one in the wild.

But all the uninique weapons found in the wild are not repairable. When they break, they are destroyed. When they say badly damaged, there is no way to repair them. Luckly they are all common though. They may seem rare at a time, but they are not. They may be more common in some areas, so if you want to replenish your stock of say fire weapons, you need to head to an area. So a quick, quick travel will do. Or a long horse ride if you playing all natural like.

After finishing every divine beast you get a weapon that you can get back for free if it breaks, which is basically the same as repairing. Have you actually played the game?

If only there was a quicker way to change weapons. Like if their could have been a... I don't know, second screen with equipment on it you could just tap and have the next weapon.

No, you got me. Never played the game.

Alright, those weapons in the footage were breaking with like 4 - 6 freaking hits, that is just absurd, specially having to switch weapons so many times and stopping the flow of combat. People are comparing it TW3, but I've gone hours in TW3 without worrying about weapon durability, this is a whole new level of annoyance. I mean, at least last a full fight before breaking. I'm not a fan of the "it's only early on" defense since it basically admits it is a problem but it's only really annoying/disruptive early on.

Answered #2 already in post after yours and before this. But hoarding is not really possible, cause you only start with like 5 spots to even hold a sword. You upgrade to like 25 or something later, but still it always feels like too small. So don't expect to hoard. It's just not possible.

As for how long each lasts. The btter the weapon, the longer it lasts. Later in game you will find weapons that have a +durability stat on them, so they obviously last longer as well. But then it comes down to using the right weapons. Say your fighting a box or a tree trunk. An axe will take them down no problem and can chop down or break hundreds of boxes. Yet you use your sword and it will break after only a couple trees or a few boxes. Same with mining. use a hammer and you can mine 50 deposits. Use anything else and you may get through 2.

Enemies are the same. If one has a shield and you just repeatedly force your way through their shield the wepaon will likely not last that fight against that one guy. If you sneak up and stealth kill enemies you will kill like 100 before it breaks.

But as teh game goes, I find I'm throwing a weapon down or at an enemy to get rid of it to pick up a new one before it ever breaks on me. It's only the tough bosses like Lynell and others that I go through a full weapon or two in teh fight. But as I said, you find equivalent or better weapons as loot after fight so its fine.

The weapon breakage is ridiculous, regardless of how fantastic the game is, so he has a good point, especially the part about constantly pausing and entering inventory to equip new gear. However, his 7/10 score seems overly harsh.
Not harsh enough to tell him to drink bleach though (besides; he's already pale enough as is).

It's not his only complaint tho. His review deals more indepth about the other things that he found to be aggravating or just questionable design. Saying that 7/10 is harsh, in my mind, is close to saying that a zelda game should not be score anything below an 8.
