Forums - Gaming Discussion - Switch battery life: 2h 48m when playing Zelda

When the original 3DS launched, I bet someone on this site (can't remember who) avatar control or sit control or something that it would have better battery life than the "PSP 2". I was so wrong! Luckily, they never called me on the bet.

Historically, Nintendo always had better battery life than the competition but, at the expense of power. Not with 3DS! For me, the NN3DS was a huge improvement but, like I said, I never did a comparison. Unlike the original, I can turn the New 3DS off and the battery won't be dead after a few days.

I got a little wordy just to say: "My case is anecdotal. May not apply to everyone. I do have a New 3DS and a Vita, though."

Well, I don't have a 3DS to test this, but I guess they should be at least pretty close. I have a friend with a regular 3DS XL, I will ask him about the battery and see what he thinks of it.

your vita isn't trying to streetpass all the time, that is the only difference.. one sleeps for real, the other is semi-sleeping

It's a possibility. The Vita has that Near app that warns me of what games people are playing in the vicinities, get bonus items from people close-by and stuff like this, but I don't know how it would compare to 3DS with Streetpass on regarding power consumption. Did you tried to use the 3DS with all connectivity turned off to see how long the battery lasts?

Edit: the Vita also seems to wake up 1 or 2 times per hour to sync data with PSN and daily (after midnight) to sync trophies and saves.

Indeed. The only news to get out of this thread is that Nem either has been living under a rock or is slow on the uptake.

Don't you wish? The thread was for those saying it was going to be 3 hours minimal in a previous discussion.

The battery life is even less than the 3 hours Nintendo touted. This is absolutely terribe for any portability, sorry to say. Fans can come up with all sorts of excuses, but they know no portable console would get lack of flaming if it presented this kind of battery life. Also, i bet its even worse if you play an online game like mario kart.

Point at hand: The Switch is terrible at beeing portable. This news isn't for me. :p

"Update: We also ran a test using the system with the lowest brightness level and got 3 hours and 5 minutes of play time. All of our tests were done with the system in “Airplane Mode” which disables wifi.

So technically it can go over 3 hours at the lowest settings for breath of the wild. A little bit better and not that bad considering Breath of the Wild is an open world game. Also the switch can use usb-c charger so its alot more forgivable. Besides it lasts more than my computer for sure.

Maybe i'll wait for an improved version with better battery life.

yeah, if you turn streetpass / wifi off you get several days of standby. don't remember exactly now but i think i had it like that for ~3days like that
wifi/wireless is what kills all 'smart' devices (3g modules are usually rated at 500mah i.e.)

Zelda is probably one of the most demanding game Switch will receive. And it was at default lighting.

Thats not good. That means theres no bar to be set as the generation progresses and if Nintendo wants serious gamers of all kinds to join in with the switch they will need as many third party games as they can get. AAA games will push the switch to the limit beyond even what Zelda is even trying to achieve.

You really have fun downplaying, don't you? Is battery degradation suddlenly an exclusive problem of switch? Wasn't Vita or 3DS affected by this too? What about those Vita games that lasts barely 2 hours, were those 1 hour after 1 year of degradation or that is just a Switch thing? Isn't maybe less of a problem here since this is an hybrid and you may not be playing it as a portable always unlike on Vita/3DS case? And also, honestly, don't you have anything more productive to do? Is not like your trashing is gonna prevent anyone from buying it or is gonna change anyone minds, is just noise.

Less games will be played on the switch on average but because it demands so much it will take a toll compared to the 3DS has lower budget and less demanding games made for it. The 3D im sure was the brunt of the issue with battery drainage on that platform.

He believes that battery degradation is as big as a problem as portrayed in NATO's troll post. Basically, he believes the troll post constituted an actual argument or valid point, and he's defending it.

Beyond that, there isn't anything more to say. It's not possible to bring sense into something that's nonsensical to begin with.

Thanks. Thought I had lost all comprehension skills for a minute!
