When the original 3DS launched, I bet someone on this site (can't remember who) avatar control or sit control or something that it would have better battery life than the "PSP 2". I was so wrong! Luckily, they never called me on the bet.

Historically, Nintendo always had better battery life than the competition but, at the expense of power. Not with 3DS! For me, the NN3DS was a huge improvement but, like I said, I never did a comparison. Unlike the original, I can turn the New 3DS off and the battery won't be dead after a few days.

I got a little wordy just to say: "My case is anecdotal. May not apply to everyone. I do have a New 3DS and a Vita, though."

Well, I don't have a 3DS to test this, but I guess they should be at least pretty close. I have a friend with a regular 3DS XL, I will ask him about the battery and see what he thinks of it.

your vita isn't trying to streetpass all the time, that is the only difference.. one sleeps for real, the other is semi-sleeping

It's a possibility. The Vita has that Near app that warns me of what games people are playing in the vicinities, get bonus items from people close-by and stuff like this, but I don't know how it would compare to 3DS with Streetpass on regarding power consumption. Did you tried to use the 3DS with all connectivity turned off to see how long the battery lasts?

Edit: the Vita also seems to wake up 1 or 2 times per hour to sync data with PSN and daily (after midnight) to sync trophies and saves.
