What's that saying people always use? "The strongest console never won a generation"?

Not these days. When you have two identical consoles with a library that offers 90% of the same games. Than the more attractive the powerful console looks. Why do you think the PS4 sold so well especially at launch with very little exclusives separating the two. Similar prices yet one console offered slightly better preformance.

> implying 90% of games are the same

> implying people were choosing more based on power than the huge price difference

> implying PlayStation's track record for delivering a wide variety of great games had nothing to do with it

> implying the Xbox brand was ever as strong as PlayStation, when in reality the lead only ever existed because of the year market headstart

Oh boy are you misguided.

To be fair, xbox only needs US and UK market to be successful. The 360 and ps3 were nearly tied (ps3 slightly ahead), but the 360 had a way higher software attach ratio (almost 2:1) because US and UK buys the most software out of all the regions. So if Microsoft dominates US and UK like they did with the 360 era, they will be fine. It's amazing how xbox one is only a few million behind ps4 in United States despite the botch launch. If they don't mess up they can easily dominate the region which will be huge.

The Xbox One was $100 more expensive than the PS4 at launch. The broader audience didn't care for the slightly better resolution when they went Christmas shopping, but they cared a lot about that $100 difference.

The PS4 Pro would sell a lot better than the PS4 Slim if people cared that much about performance compared to price. But it's not the case, and it surely never will be. The Scorpio will also sell less than the XOne Slim, the difference in sales depending on the difference in price.

The brand image, the hype around the console and the games are 3 other factors at least as important as performance, if not more (surely more). The PS4 is getting great exclusive after great exclusive lately (Hatsune Miku, Tales of, Yakuza, Kingdom Hearts, Gravity Rush, Nioh, Horizon...), when the XOne got Halo Wars 2 and that's it. This is a lot more important than performance. People thinking that the PS4 is winning by a landslide because it was a few percents more powerful should think about it again.

A lot of those Japanese games are games that a lot of people outside of Japan don't care about. Take gravity rush 2, the game sold around 150k in it's first week and half of the sales come from Japan. It will have a hard time reaching half a million in total on a 60 million + install base. Thats why there is a lot of third party Japanese exclusives on PS4. If they were popular they will put them on xbox and pc for sure just like they did with FF15 and soon KH3.

People outside of Japan care so little about those games that Phil Spencer is going to Japan to beg for ports of those games on his console.

We all know the narrative "People don't care about the Playstation niche games", or "I would rather have Halo than the 10 niche games I don't care about you're getting". Yeah, but all those niche games "nobody" cares about usually sell pretty well and create entire markets and entire audiences dedicated only to the Playstation consoles. You want VNs? Playstation. You want rhythm games? Playstation. You want JRPGs? Playstation. You want any other kind of Japanese games, even the weirdest ones? Playstation. A lot of people, like me, just can't buy an Xbox because at least a couple of games they want can't release on Xbox. I'll take my 15+ weird niche games like Gravity Rush and Nioh over your Halo anytime. "Pew Pew Pew" is already overused by western third party games every year.

So, you can continue to say "Less games is better, power is everything", but this has been proven wrong again and again. It will be proven wrong again with the Scorpio.

We don't know if Phil is going to try to get those games. I think he is just focusing on getting the big Japanese games like KH3 and scorpio 4k support.Funny, because those pew pew pew games sale on ps4 more than any of those Japanese niche games. Those Japanese games are getting worse and worse sells each generation and less of those types of games are being made each generation. Also, I rather play Halo than play as some half naked anime chick with her tits hanging out going out on a friendship adventure and judging by the sales of those games, people seem to agree with me. I mean there is no way Sony is happy with the sales of Gravity Rush 2. It probably won't even get a third installment, but we will see more Halo and Gears.

Some of the comments in this thread are downright cringeworthy, sigh.

Anyway, hopefully Scorpio does have something like PS4 Pro's boost mode that improves performance for standard Xbox One games that had performance issues before (Just Cause 3, Project Cars, AC Unity, etc.), and hopefully there are alot more games with Scorpio patches at launch than PS4 Pro had, considering devs will have had more time to work on Scorpio than they had work on PS4 Pro before launch.

Glad Phil is finally trying in Japan. Don't know how much headway he will make, but at least he has some ammo now, the fact that FFXV has most likely sold over 1m (with digital) on XB1 is sure to be good news to Japanese devs who had qualms about Xbox One before. Porting costs are lower this gen thanks to XB1 and PS4 both using x86 and AMD tech, which means you need less sales to turn a profit on a port. Most likely any game that will sell at least 100k copies on XB1 will turn a profit on the port, and there are still quite a few JP series that could sell 100k+ on XB1 that aren't on XB1 yet.

That Scorpio affect, those comments will only get worse until it releases. Just showing that insecurity and fear over a piece of a hardware.

Good news Phil is going to Japan, hopefully its not for a holiday and something more long overdue...

Your reply doesn't address a single point.

My point is as long xbox has US and UK, they will be successful since those regions buy the most games. They could also dominate both those regions easily. Even with their mess ups, they are doing well in US and UK.

Because Halo and Gears, Halo and Gears, Halo and Gears sell so much consoles, right? That Xbox strategy failed, that debate is already over. Your very own description of what a Japanese game is just shows that you have no idea what you're talking about. We discussed this several times already, you've always been wrong about it and maybe always will be, it's useless to try to convince you.

"PS4 sells twice as much as the One because it has a slightly better resolution" is such an accurate analysis...

There is surveys that demonstrates that resolution is a big reason why they bought the system. Most of the PS4 games people are buying and play are found on the xbox. If those games perform and look significantly better on xbox scorpio a lot of people will gravitate towards xbox. If those Japanese games held a lot of weight in sells Microsoft wouldn't make a scorpio, but make Japanese games. Since a lot of those Japanese games are cheap to make, but they know as well as everyone they don't.

Let's see here, ONLY a few million behind you say? Now let's say they were 2 million behind just to make the math easy, to BREAK EVEN in the US, Xbox would have to outsell PS4 by 40k per week to do it in a year, it currently sells on average 40k vs ps4's 60k, so you're looking at needing a monthly increase from 40k a week to 100k a week just to break even, if they fall short and only sell 80k a week it'll take them two years, 70k a week? 4 years.

they aren't going to do it, not with Xbox and not with Scorpio, and I'll tell you exactly why, it isn't the consoles power, it's the lack of games people want to play. It has some good games don't get me wrong, but nowhere near as diverse and expansive a library, just the ever shrinking halo crowd and the hangers-on from the glory days of the 360.
