Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are the gaming preferences of this community different from the general population?

We're the connaisseurs, the ones for whom gaming is more then just a game, it's also part of our lives. People who just play FIFA and nothing else might not know the wonders of a Zelda game or of the technical prowess of Naughty Dog.

We're basically the tasters of the gaming avant-garde :)

So basically you're just mad because there aren't enough xbox fans on this site.

Owning a console doesn't make you a fan. I own all 3 home consoles this gen and a PC but am only a fan off certain franchises. Not console manufacturers

I'm not sure "disconnected from reality" would be the right term. lol

But I think its because understand the industry and discuss it with other while the casual gamer will just randomly walk into a game store and buy whatever game looks cool to them or what they hear other people talk about.

Because most of us are not casuals...

To O.P

Windows phones are mobile devices, not portable gaming consoles.

Also Surface tablets are basically PC's.

Bet with Intrinsic:

The Switch will outsell 3DS (based on VGchartz numbers), according to me, while Intrinsic thinks the opposite will hold true. One month avatar control for the loser's avatar.

Peoples love for games here is so different from what people actually buy. Why is this?

Just about everyone here does not like call of duty, fifa, madden, etc but these are the most popular franchises.

If i took a poll on here id say 45% are sony fans, 35% are Nintendo fans, 15% pc gamers, and 5% xbox gamers. When in reality its more like 50% sony, 30% microsoft, 10% pc, 10% nintendo.

I remember when 8th gen started everyone thought the wii u would crush xbox one and people thought xbox one would be a failure (its still ahead of the 360).

What makes us different than the general public? Is it enthusiasm? Age difference? Is it that people on the Internet favor some systems more than others?

Can O' Worms, Buddy.

There are those who play games, and there are gamers.  Two diferent things, and not all gamers are the same.  Just speaking for myself, I love creativity and unconventionalism in games.  I love that in life.  So the games I pick reflect me in reality.  There is little to no creativity and unconventionalism in sports and military shooters.

The VGC community goes where console sales go. I remember back in 2011 this place was a haven for Wii fans. And I know everyone remembers the WiiU/PS4/XI sales prediction thread. Wii fans were out in full force. Now we see Sony fans more than any other fans. That's the way it goes around here. As far as the "disconnected from reality" comment; people will like what they like. Most gamers who post to gaming sites aren't casuals. What appeals to us will usually be broader than that of "reality".

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

Hey! They got SONY on my amiibo! Wait a minute. Two great gaming tastes that game great together!

Not really disconnected, just not representative of the whole gaming community in general

A smaller sample size is my answer to the question

Why is this community so disconnected from reality? It is because this is a videogames community.

This community has gaming enthusiasts, which means that it doesn't represent the general public. EA's sports games and pop shooters are popular among the casual gamers, i.e sports fans first and gamers second and who are playing because of social pressure in their reference group.

And when you consider fans of a certain games company, there already are people who played Nintendo games 35 years ago (and more), when in general not many that old videogame publishers even exist today anymore.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.
