People look so hyped to play the Wii U games on Switch.

My 8th gen collection

The hype is real. How do I know?
Because people like me can't stop watching videos that offer absolutely no new information. We're so desperate, we gobble up any tidbit of Switch non-news we can get.

I'm assuming this is hyperbole.

My cousin's getting one: he has neither a WiiU or 3DS. Very much anecdotal but if you wanted a new customer in the Nintendo userbase, there's one.

Something that can go down as time goes by. I'm expecting price drops and/or bundles come the holidays.

As if Japanese-made games have never had appeal in the West.

Lack of power didn't stop PS1, PS2, Wii, DS and 3DS from doing as well as they did despite their more powerful competitors. Nintendo's handhelds have always been weaker than their console contemporaries, naturally, and yet they did very well.

1) Of course it's a hyperbole
2) Most certainly anecdotal. I know people with 3DS who are wholly uninterested in the Switch
3) And so can the competitors, meaning the Switch will constantly be playing catch-up

No different in any other industry where competitors are always playing catch-up with one another. This is good: Nintendo needs incentive to cut prices and put out bundles.

4) Missing the point. The Wii U relied almost entirely on Japanese games and was a staggering failure. Unless Nintendo focus on getting the top selling Western games on its console or at least create an IP or two that are appealing to the Western gamer, the Switch will sell horribly.

Mario, Zelda, Smash, Mario Kart, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Metroid, Mario Party, Xenoblade, Splatoon. I think these have considerable appeal in the West and Arms seems to be a good start as far as new IP is concerned.

And I also think the Switch's portability will lead to large Japanese adoption thus enticing Japanese development.

5) Those consoles weren't almost a generation behind their competition. The Switch most likely will be. The Wii U was just as underpowered, and look how well that did.

The Wii was and it wasn't even a handheld. The Switch is a handheld so it can at least excuse what it lacks in power for what it has in terms of portability.

Switch, eh, whatever. I mean I like it, I want to get one eventually... but getting hype for hardware, well, that's not my thing.

^

As cool as hardware features are, they're useless without software to back it up. No one would get VR hesdsets if all you can do is view 360 cat videos.

For some, at the very least

I'm a bit more skeptical, but I think it will do just fine

The difference is the Switch is less powerful than the competition, yet more expensive, so it's in the worst position possible with regards to pricing, even if it does have price cuts. Bundles are also only as good as the games.

Those titles, while popular with Nintendo fans, fail to bring in new customers as shown by the Wii U.

The Wii had the one-hit success of casual gamers, which is unlikely to be replicated. Whether people care enough about portability to buy the Switch in droves has yet to be seen. It would be odd for a company to realise a product that risks cannabilising one of their other products (3DS).

Yep - the site had a database issue that led to it being down for a little bit, something to do with the connection to the MySQL database (alarmingly informative error message, they really need to setup a "Temporary issue" page...)

You are right but the Switch is also the most portable of the three. Some value that highly, most of Japan included. Laptops are usually more expensive than their desktop counterparts due to how smaller the components need to be and yet laptops have had little trouble establishing themselves.

Not all the franchises I listed made their way to the Wii U though. Smash did but it also had a 3DS counterpart and Mario Kart also had a 3DS counterpart.

The 3DS has been out for long enough. Switch needs to be Nintendo's go-to platform moving forward.

Wow! That one line is bigger than the Wii U's sales numbers

That isn't true and is simply one of those stupid internet myths. RRoD replacements were not counted as sales. Not to mention many of the replacements weren't even new machines they were refurbs.

back on topic though I think the hype is a little weak, hopefully Switch won't just have a couple of good months and will be a hit for them, I would hate to see Nintendo have another failure as I have a lot of fond memories of many hours of Mario games

I remember reading an article back then that stated the consoles were counted as sales until the company was caught. Once caught they revised the numbers... oh well, that is what I get for trusting people paid to get my clicks. If it really is not true, my bad.

citation please! there were a lot of silly blogs and crap where people posted that sort of crap, none of it ever substatiated. The reality was that is not how numbers are counted and any company doing that would be in serious trouble with the SEC as you can't make shit up when reporting to shareholders.
