I have been using an external Hard drive since I bought the Wii U. However, I realised that I have only used not more than 50 GB on it as I prefer a physical copy

I really want to get rid of the external hard drive as it takes up some shelf space and one extra power cord to use it. Based on some research i found online, ppl said that micro sd cards cannot be used to store wii u game. What is some other good method I can use without the needs of a power cord?

2.5" HDD

A 2.5" HDD will require a USB "Y" cable, one of the ends is for power, so you'll end up using two USB ports on the console.

That's not necessarily true.
This one works without a Y cable on WiiU:
Western Digital My Passport Essential (WDBACY5000Abl) USB3.0

Interesting, could it be because your's is USB 3.0??? I'm using a 2.5" HDD in a USB 2.0 external case and It didn't work without the Y cable.

A SanDisk Ultra Fit 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive. Never got any issue with it. And it's loading my game even faster than my external hard drive.

16gb USB stick.

I went wayyyy overkill with a 2tb external.  I don't think that even Spurgeon could fill that much.  =p

Although Nintendo recommended against using them, I understand from many that usb sticks have worked quite well.

A simple pendrive. Well 2 of them, 16GB each one. Is more than enough for me.

i have the 32gb model with a 16gb flashdrive. i dont download much, so its enough to last. i will probably upgrade the Switch with a 32gb microSD though

do you have any issue with flash drive? can you please share the model of the flash drive you use please? i would like to get one too

thats the exact model i have and it never gave me any problems. the Wii U does format it though so you cant do data transfers on PC, which does kind of suck

2TB UBB 2.0 3,5'' fat external drive with independant power supply. Wich is way oversized.
I used to have a 1TB 3.0 USB drive on it though wich was just wasted speed since the WiiU only supports 2.0 usb, so I swapped them around. I always go with the bigger drives and external power supply because I've made bad experiences with the smaller ones. The fuller they get the more power they draw and sometimes they won't even start up with a y-cable attached.

I didn't.

I bought digital and disc games. I just deleted the larger games when I completed them and had no intention to play. You can follow my sig for list of all of my WiiU games. I even labelled which ones were eShop titles. VC has its own column.

The difference with WiiU and others, is that WiiU doesn't force you to install the damn game like others. Hopefully, Switch is the same. Forced install for a physical game is dumb.
