wii u owners: what do you use to expand the storage?

That's not necessarily true.
This one works without a Y cable on WiiU:

Interesting, could it be because your's is USB 3.0??? I'm using a 2.5" HDD in a USB 2.0 external case and It didn't work without the Y cable.
