Forums - Nintendo - Shinen on the Switch and Fast RMX: Interesting power tidbits

You were able to squeeze quite a lot out of the Wii U with Fast Racing Neo. How would you say Switch compares to that?

On Wii U it was tough to get to the visuals we wanted at 60fps. We had to use a lot of tricks to make it happen at all. For instance, on Wii U we were able to pull off two player split-screen racing at 720p and 60fps. Not bad at all, but with three or four players we had to scale down 30fps. Well, most racing games today don't even feature split-screen at all, so we didn't felt too bad about it.

However, on the Switch we didn't had that limit. On Nintendo Switch in TV mode we now have four player split-screen, at 1080p and 60fps with much more details enabled. For worst case scenarios we enable dynamic resolution scaling to make sure the game keeps 60fps in unforeseen situations, tho that's usually not something you can spot.

So basicly on Wii U: 4 players - 720p/30fps on Wii U

On Switch:  4 players - 1080p/60fps, with better graphics

Wipeout on ps3 did pretty much the same blistering 60fps 1080p, dynamic resolution scaling that only occured very rarely plus added a full 7.1 soundtrack and supported 3D mode.

I wasn't impressed with Fast Racing Neo graphically on wii u and probably the same on Switch.

These type of games are achieved on fairly humble hardware and not a good indicator of performance level.

Games that have both huge gpu and cpu requirements creating a complex world with a physics engine and weather and time effects are a real test. That's why something like Skyrim is far more important to judge the Switch performance level than this game. Skyrim is also directly comparable with many other versions to see in which areas it wins or fails. We will learn much more from that game than this one.

So the game is 1080p@60fps in multiplayer instead of 720p@30fps on the Wii U. Sounds like a nice boost in power to me, especially considering this is a launch game and developers need to get to know the hardware.

Going from 4 players - 720p/30fps on Wii U, to 4 players - 1080p/60fps with better graphics on Switch, is very big boost and tells us that Switch hardware is much more capable than Wii Us.

Not only that, but "with much more details enabled".

Indeed, it is a very big boost, and Wipeout graphics are shit compare with FRN

34 years playing games.

Sub 720p. One of the tricks they pulled was faking resolution a bit, using a technique not too dissimilar from what Killzone Shadowfall used.  This statement plus direct feed footage indicate that trick is not in use with FAST RMX which means it is rendering at a full 1080p resolution.

And the idea that a multiplat is the most reliable guage of power for a system is kinda silly.  That's what led some early on to conclude the PS3 was weaker than the 360.  I mean, the PS3 version of Skyrim ran like crap and looked inferior for freaking months, I love Bethesda but they are no wizards.  They've gotten better though.

Exclusives by studios who know what they are doing are always the best guage of the actual capabilities of a platform.  And that goes for Switch, PS4, Xbone, 3DS, any platform.

Split-screen on a racing game..... apart from Mario Kart 8, we have not seen that frequently lately.

I really miss that. Every racing game should have split screen and local multiplayer.

You are comparing a game that used maybe at max 2k texture  packs. Wii U used 4-8K. Much better looking game.

To be fair, FRMX isn't a locked 1080p, Shin'en have confirmed it operates with a dynamic framebuffer that drops below 1080p when under load. (See link in OP)

The only graphical advantage Wipeout has over FRN is resolution. In terms of textures, effects, shaders, lighting, etc FRN blows Wipeout so far out of the water its not even funny.

Wipeout's assets are PS3/360 launch title caliber, while even Digital Foundry said that FRN's graphics would pass on PS4/Xbox One with a resolution upgrade.

Wow! Nice improvement there!
