Forums - Nintendo - No TV-out without dock. Alternatives?

I'll probably get another dock(s) at some point but until then what would be a good alternative if I want to use Switch on more than one TV without unplugging the dock?

Is USB-C to HDMI enough if not worried about battery? I assume it will output at 720p/lower clock without power?

Would this work for both power and HDMI-out?

Any other alternatives?

Noticed that the dock you link cost 100gbp without the discount... didn't know those were expensive.
For travel purposes, I did think that using something similar to a cable dock should be sufficient.

I have used mhl in the past for my mobiles (shame this standard is gone now), and always used that powered.
Something like that would be nice to have in usb-c.

I have seen cheap usbc-hdmi adapters, but a simple cable might be even better.

If these are workable or not, we'll find out when it releases.

You're assuming there isn't a small processor in the dock that allows it to output to HDMI. Those corded adapters might not work with the Switch.

I'd assume any cord that has a USB-C on one end and HDMI on other would work for TV out. But I also expect 3rd parties to create one that does the USB-C to HDMI/USB-C for display and charging as well. Maybe not at launch but I'm sure it will come.

Hell all dock is doing is that. It takes the C interface and breaks it out to 3 USB (2.0 and 3.0) ports + HDMI + AC charger. There is no reason to think 3rd parties won't replicate it for cheap.

I think it's been confirmed there is no extra CPU in the dock. HDMI-out wouldn't need additional CPU. I doubt those corded adapters will work with Switch. I had the one with red wires and couldn't get it to do HDMI and USBpower with phone. They're mhl so I don't think they're supported by Switch anyway.

Hoping something more portable than the dock will pop up before launch. I don't want to accidentally blow my Switch up with the wrong hub.

It's been confirmed that the dock does not contain "supplementary processing" to give the Switch more processing power, but that doesn't mean there isn't something in there that lets the Switch know that "this USB connection is a Switch dock, enter docked mode".

Anyone ever thought about encryption? You know, to eliminate exactly these scenarios and make people buy overpriced plastic. If there isn't any decryption going on in that dock I'm eating my left Joycon.

Why the left one?

It's the less expensive one.

That would make sense given the price. 3rd party charge/play stands are available but no HDMI-out. Doesn't seem very Nintendo from a 'spread the 4P Mario Kart goodness' pov.

If Nintendo's going full mercenary I might buy some stock.

Aren't they the same price despite the right one costing more to manufacture??
