Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Switch is not another Wii U!

Anyone who thinks Switch will be anything like Wii U in terms of success simply isn't paying attention and can't see the big picture when it comes to gaming history and Nintendo's strategy.

Wii U was essentially a gamecube disguised as a Wii (with a horrible controller).

Switch is more like the Wii with greater versatility and functionality - combined with the handheld aspects that Nintendo thrives in, combined with more old-school sensibilities (particularly SNES), of which Nintendo's audience is larger. This thing will sell like hotcakes, mark my words.

Wiiu had miiverse

Wiiu hard as many ports as possible at launch

Wiiu had free online

Wiiu had multimedia capabilities

Wiiu was coming after a highly successfull console

Switch has nothing of those.

Tell me more about those WiiU multimedia features that it launched with....

They have 2K Sports so I'm more than happy. Now give me WWE 2K18, dammit!

Wrestling was so huge on Nintendo back in the N64 days. Remember all those wrestling games that it got?

Do I! That's why I went back to being a wrestling fan. It's my secret shame.

My biggest worry is that Android tablets are so powerful nowadays. Could someone swoop in and basically make the same thing except with the Google Play Store? Because that would kill the Switch.

Hell, make a controller mod for my Moto Z Force.
*I know some devices can use a controller. I'm taking about using one without any extra effort on the consumers part*

We don't know how powerful the hardware in the Switch is, if it used an underclocked X1 it would be around the power of the Pixel C but weaker than the iPad Pro 12".

If it used something along the lines of the P1 however it would beat the iPad and Android tablets for another year or two probably, and it would be sub-par with the Smach Z which does a 100 gflops more than the P1, which is upgradeable, has Windows, 6 hour battery life and 1080p for 50 more dollars, but you're not getting the exclusives and form factor that you are getting with the Switch.

Besides, even if nVidia supplied hardware for an Android tablet (which they wouldn't with the Switch) that would be more powerful or sub-par with the Switch all you'd be getting is mobile games, and unstable emulators for consoles, and an outdated version of Android if they don't update it too. This wouldn't kill the Switch at all, and as long as it has a web browser that's enough multimedia, if video streaming service sites work that is, you could also run Google Docs or Office Online, or even Kindle Web.

Also, tablets are also very much a market in decline, fewer and fewer are being released, you have one or two each year from a notable manufacturer and you only hear about it once or twice, Apple has the iPad though those are quite expensive, and you have the Chinese Windows tablet market which are Atom rehashes, though they're starting to shift to using the newest Celerons and Core Ms. If Switch has a good enough browser and a steady supply of games not only is it the most powerful handheld but a pretty adequate multimedia tablet that doubles as a streaming box and has console quality games.

You got me there.

I still think the Switch will have a capable browser when it launches, though.

If Nintendo is smart, which I I believe they are, they'll fix their handling of Western markets. I do recall Iwata admitting that their understanding in this area was a problem; hopefully someone in the company took that to heart.

And that's exactly why the Switch had to be a hybrid, or a dedicated handheld. Releasing a powerful console and handheld but trying to support them both just wasn't going to work out. Sony already tried, and failed.

That's the thing. The Switch is designed to appeal to both traditional and non-traditional gamers. Both handheld and console. Online and local multiplayer. Motion controls and joysticks. It's pretty much the best of all worlds when it comes to actual control schemes, and I expect the games to reflect that.

It launches with no functionality outside of games and a $300 price, but it does not have to stay that way. I think the Switch's success is really dependent on Nintendo's ability to roll with the punches.

Plus it's not really blue ocean. Just the next logical step for Nintendo hardware.

How it seems currently, Switch is pretty much an blue ocean product, as nobody else seems to be interested in making games for the oldschool. Notice also the price of pretty much everything on Switch. It is because the people in their 30's and 40's generally make more money than teenagers or people in their twenties, which is the target market for the AAA industry.

Actually, I think the average gamer is in their thirties at this point. I've always understood Blue ocean to be like the Wii, which essentially created a market from nothing. Nintendo seems to be trying to position the Switch into a specific, but existing, core gaming niche. The high prices are probably because they expect that kids will be able to share a single Switch unit if need be, and the older single gamers who will be their earliest adopters can afford it.

Good response. And now you have be wondering if it does have a really good browser, could it somehow run third party apps or even be "side loaded" like the Ouya. That would be awesome!

1. I hardly think anyone bought a Wii U for Miiverse and I hardly think anyone won't buy something which lacks it.

2. You mean those ports which were unoptimised, released 6 months after their original release and had missing content and features? However will the Switch succeed without those.

3. You do realise one of the big complaints of Wii U was how awful the online was? Nintendo is only giving us what we asked for with that one. (also I didn't see it affecting the other consoles too much)

4. It didn't have any Netflix etc. at launch either

5. I'm pretty sure the fact that it was the 'Wii' successor was the thing that caused it to fail (especially since people thought it was just a Wii accessory)

So yeah the Switch mostly does have none of those things you mentioned, but thats more of a good thing than bad.

People arn't calling it another wii u because of what it is but because Nintendo are hell bent on making the same mistakes.
