I don't think so. On Playstation you see what percentage of players gotten a certain trophy. Mostly, they're in the single digits, except easy ones like getting x number of kills, they could be as high as 30%. Which is still low because those require no effort and you get them mostly by accident, and is not anywhere near a majority. Only those that you automatically get (and thus aren't 'achievements' at all) like when finishing the first level, score high. Tasks that require something extremely tedious could even be below 1%, and so are Platinum ones. I'd actually argue that nobody except total hard-core players, care about getting trophies.

It's low because many "gamers" don't even play their games for more than an hour and the majority of "gamers" don't finish their games.
So yeah achievement hunters are a minority, just like people completing the single player campaigns of their games.

Exactly.

It's funny, I got Rise of the Tomb Raider since a few weeks and there's a trophy about you having to "Survive an avalange", which is a story event ten minutes into the game, yet only 89% or whatever, don't know exactly, have that trophy! Then, a similar one "Survive the night in the cold", literally just a cutscene and a twenty meter walk further on, even has about 5% less. What are some people doing with their games?

It would be cool to have achievements, but oh well.

Weirdly I'm fine to get them if I can as they are something to 'achieve' in the game but I think there should be more too them.

Something like Dead Rising, where unlocking certain achievements permanently granted you an in-game item or cloth and could also give you a user profile image?

Another reason why people shouldn't buy the Nintendo Switch.

Not getting a virtual "Good job you" is a reason not to buy a console?

Well games have changed over the years. I grew up in the NES era were the games pretty much told you to go fuck yourself if you werent good enough.lol

If that is the case in Dead Rising then yes but for all games obviously. Or at least a special XBL/PSN player icon when you get a platinum or something.

Hmm, pie.

On a side note, and while we ultimately don't have an answer on this yet (so go ahead and discard this if it doesn't come true), some people misunderstand the value of achievements/trophies. I'm not a hunter myself (even though I ocassionally love going for that 1000/1000 - Platinum, depending on the game), but these things not only provide another element of interactivity within the game (totally optional, so you don't really have to go for it if you don't want to), but also can further cement a strong, dedicated and social online infraestructure and community; something Nintendo really lacks (heck you have to download a freaking app for your mobile in order to do voice chat; Xbox Live already had implemented voice chat back in 2002).

Both inside and outside Nintendo's ecosystem, gamers could gather around this system. Just look at communities like Trueachievements or the likes. They have plenty of users that enjoy collecting achievements, competing against others and actively socialize. Same within the console, you could compare your games with another person or see the amount of progress he/she has made. Nintendo not including achievements is not just a small gimmick they chose to ignore, but a circumstancial evidence that they don't want to create in any way or shape a social ecosystem for Nintendo consoles (even worse now that Miiverse and the likes is being taken away).

And this wouldn't be so bad...but now then there's the fact that you will have to pay for online access past a certain point. An online access that basically covers a self-contained individual page (My Nintendo; though you don't necessarily have to pay to access this) and multiplayer. Achievements, at the very least, would be a way to start an ecosystem that's now behind a paywall, but the way it is right now, there's nothing.

Why are people trying to turn Nintendo into Sony or Microsoft. If you don't like what they are doing buy an XBOX or PlayStation, because they are offering everything your complaining about Nintendo not having.

According to the Switch presentation it's Nintendo who wants to be like Xbox and Playstation.
