I loved it. I think it was fantastic, it has a slow start... and stays slow a lof of the time, but I do feel the final act delivers. I also think its probably gonna be a oscar nominee and the great reviews its getting are well justified.

I disliked it unfortunately.
Spoiler:
She learns their language, which gives her the ability to think in their way, and therefore predict the future/see time nonlinearly. It makes zero sense to me. But it's presented like it was some deep spiritual thing. Also if the aliens could see the future, why didn't they prevent the bomb from killing one of them? And why are they even there in the first place, they only solve the problem they themselves caused when they arrived. "Because they need humanity's help in 3000 years" - well I guess that kind of explains it....
3/10 for me

Honestly think its a poorly made movie.... Like a 4/10 or so.
I enjoyed something like Contact with Jodie foster so much more.

So I am a bit slow.

The gift was a universal language? That made it possible to....?

Also why the time travel?

The "gift" was the way of thinking, required to express yourself in their language.

There was no time travel.

She has flash's of future events, in the future she writes a book about understanding their lanaguge, that helped her understand their language in the present.

Why did they come to teach us their language? because in 3000 years time or so, a event will unfold where they will need human help. Your telling me a race as advanced as them, that can "see" into the future 3000 years ahead of time, wont be able to plan there way out of a bad situation, even with 3000 years forewarning? Yet somehow they "need" humans to help them then? give me a break.

I just felt it was kinda corny and lame, and didnt really fit together that well plot wise or from a story purspective.

Great movie. The last two years have not been kind to small / midsize non indie films. So any time a film like this, Midnight Special, Green Room comes along I lap it up. Much better than the MCU / DCU crap out there.
