Dragon Quest is super popular in Japan and mildly popular in NA. Europe didn't get DQ until its 8th installment in 2005 on the PS2, almost 20 years after the series started.

But if you're in Europe you are in access to: DQ8 on PS2, 4-6 on DS/Smart phones, 9 on DS, and 7,8, and 11 on 3DS, and 11 on PS4

That`s probably why I`ve never played the series before. I didn`t even got FF12, since I`d gone Xbox only by the end of the 6th gen, so DQ8 never stood a chance releasing that late.

As for the ones with access to... don`t even have working PS2 anymore, but if it were to be re-released as a PS2 to PS4 game then I`d play 8. The mobile ones... eww! And the 3DS ones... well my 3DS would probably be so confused that it would break down if I tried to play anything other than Pokemon on it I`ll most likely be getting 11 on PS4 when it actually releases though.

Yeah we only have a little bit of beta footage of 11 so far. https://youtu.be/d8ZiWeIknk8 at the 2min mark it looks remarkably similar to BotW XD

I like Both Franchises but it's obscene how disrespected Dragon Quest has been in the States the last 5 or 6 years. I'm glad that Square has been giving it a chance again but it still irks me about the whole issue

I haven't played enough of either series to make a proper judgment (played 5 FF titles and completed 2, played 2 DQ titles and completed 1)...but I prefer the aesthetics of Dragon Quest a lot more.

Final Tactics Advance was my favorite of any of these games though.

Ys beats both. So does Xenoblade and Grandia plus Phantasy Star (not online)

Out of those 2 Dragon Quest. It's remained consistently good. Final Fantasy just gets worse and worse. FF is Sonic now. It sells in spite of itself.

Well i think FFXV will fix that,

Ugh game is so badly designed so no. Yes based on brand will get rave reviews but like 13 a few months later be hated. I'm tired of writing the long written posts of breaking down every aspect of this game but it's really a poorly designed RPG that doesn't  understand even the basic fundementals of RPG design. Mehcanics and Narrative (Narrative is not always the same as story) are broken as hell. I digress because I have explained it a million times but since I was saying the same about Watch DOgs Destiny and No Mans Sky before launch and no one listened to me..just wait.

I guess ultimately, I'd pick Final Fantasy. But Dragon Quest is definitely more consistent. The best Final Fantasy games are better than the best Dragon Quest games. But the worst Final Fantasies are MUCH worse than the worst Dragon Quest games. And I respect Dragon Quest for continuing to fly the flag and sticking to their roots. In my opinion, of course.

I also think voiced protaginists are overrated. I don't need somebody to speak for me, I like seeing myself as the main character. Othewise, it's like playing an on rails story in terms of my experience.

Feel the same.

OT: Have to go with Final Fantasy but next year my vote might change. Another dissapointing experience from FF and a DQVIII like experience from the new FF and DQ can make that happen.

Funny you bring up Squaresoft and Enix in the OP because the merger totally destroyed whatever magic Squaresoft had during the Ps1 era...

You haven't played Final Fantasy XV.

The 2 demos and the demo's give enough away more from a playing it stand point but understanding and knowing game design standpoint. It's pretty evident They still have no clue. This is a game I was really looking forward to. Plus the all male thing breaks the rules in a bad way of narrative in a party based RPG. You can shoot me down like most people do all you want but I'm often there at the end saying yeah..been saying it for a while. Esp lately with No Mans Sky back to 2014. Also what you said is a double edged sword. Someone can't say it's going to be good either if only playing demos do not count but they do. Even if tweaks are made somethings that are already set are the biggest issues. The game has some neat ideas and looks very pretty and yes the music will be great but remove the paint and the frame is a Ford Edsil of fundementals. Sad part is I will likely still play this at some point. I even play games I hate and despise (TOS2 on Wii ugh) because it still gives a lot of insight on how it's designed.  There is a reason I put 4-5X more hours into RPGs than most people. The Last Story a 25 hour game I have 200 hours. Ys 1 a 12 hours game,300 hours,Xenoblade X 800 hours. I put in that much as I like to examine games in every little detail from visuals to mechanics to narrative to about everything. So I don't just say DER GAME SUXXORZ PERSONA FTW..nothing like that. I want the game to be good but it's not looking to be..slick presentation is all I see.

Ok. You know nothing about Final Fantasy XV. That's made obvious by your lack of knowledge about what those two demos were made for. Duscae was made to gather feedback from those who experienced it, to both show gamers what they were going for and see how fans react to the series change of direction. While Platinum demo was a tech demo teaser. Things have changed greatly since the Duscae demo, which contained only a tiny fraction of what to expect from the final game. Gameplay has been tweaked, systems were added, controls got more polished, etc...

You pass a final judgement on the game based on demos that have never been meant to represent the final game, and try to act as if you're an authority on game design. There is nothing you've said about the game's design that is credible. Once you've played the actual game, then you'll get to talk. Until then, you just come off as a hater, and I question your motivation.

All male cast breaking rules of narrative? What rules are you referring to? Sorry, but I can only laugh out loud at that claim.

And nobody is saying the game is good in advance of playing it. People are hyped for it, they hope it will be good, but they aren't passing a definite judgement on the final game's quality. That being said, previews (you know, from people who actually played the actual game) have been very positive so far.

Finally, that you need that many hours played on a game to dissect its game design is quite telling.

Read the edit and no need to be so defensive. No need for it. Seeing you have an avatar you already made up your mind is the impression I'm getting and I can't carry discussion  that way. Again I seen this before and used it by now.
