Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumor: Nintendo Switch Will Support Micro SDXC Cards Up To 128GB In Capacity

Well the good thing is having the games on cards means no installs, which means whatever internal memory the Switch has plus your SD cards won't be eaten up by 50GB installs every time you buy a new game. I'd wager Nintendo will be pushing physical units for Switch games, while the downloadable titles will consist mostly of virtual console & remastered games from previous consoles, along with smaller eShop app-type games that are made for on-the-go play.

Guys it is 2016. Why does the DLC and patches need to install on a hdd or other storage?

Install it on the physical game cart itself. Surely at 64gb and 128gb there be plenty of left over space to install addons and patches.

If they can't do this I don't know why people are getting paid big dollars for sub par solutions.

That is not nearly enough - PS4/XBO 500GB systems struggle with space. Not to mention that SD cards of that size are actually quite expensive.

I anticiapate NX graphics will be in the ballpark of 7th gen and Wii U. Take into consideron 360 games were generally under 7GB (Skyrim is 4GB!). 1st party Nintendo games are also in that range.

Hence, developers will just have to take advantage of compression. Not piss away space like a X1 and PS4 developers.

Why only 128gb? It's 2016...

I guess you got take the size of the device and storage type into consideration.

Switch is the size of a small tablet and its not going to deliver cutting edge gaming/graphics. I bet games are gonna be smaller than anticipated thanks to compression. I imagine games with little use of FMVs should be able to stay under 10GB.

360 did amazing things with a measly 7GB.

I'm not saying that games will be PS4/Xbox One sized, but they'll likely be larger than Wii U games. A maximum size of 128 GB when it's likely a system expected to be relevant till around 2022 is odd.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

i know Nintendo does a lot to make their games small file-sized without taking away anything. Hopefully devs aren't lazy and try doing the same.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

These are cartridges so they will probably take advantage of compression. Graphics will probably be in the ball park of 360 and Wii U as well. I think a lot of games will be under 10GB.

I don't think the games will be that big either.

You guys are getting scared by PS4/XB1/PC game sizes, NS is not going to be in that power range IMO, something 2.5x a PS3/360/Wii U is about what you're going to get with a Switch, games will be considerably smaller as a result.

That Mario Switch game they showed looked marginally better than a Wii U game, not even close to a generational leap.

Plenty of game carts may leave empty space available to write, so patches wouldn't need space on console/SD card.
For those that need extra space, you have flexibility to store it on internal memory or whatever SD card you prefer.

It does sound like physical "carts" will have advantages here, but I don't really have a problem with that...
And over the lifetime of the console, prices on SDXC cards should drop, and 512GB+ sizes should get reasonable.
Now just hoping that it is at least close to Xbone/OG.PS4 power at least in toaster mode.

The "toaster" doesn't add power, so I doubt NS will be able to get close to the XBox One even.

You'll get a boost from full clock (rather than battery constraint), but that's not going to magically make the system like double or triple the power.

Memory bandwidth is going to be an issue here, LPDDR4 RAM isn't magically going to become GDDR5 RAM just because you have a toaster dock.

I'd expect graphics about double a PS3/Wii U honestly in real world games. For a portable device that's pretty good.

Game sizes should be in line with PS3/360/Wii U games, not much bigger than that. PS3/360 games are way smaller than their PS4/XB1 counterparts, NBA 2K on PS3 is like 8GB versus 40GB on the PS4, lol.
