Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Rumor: Nintendo Switch Will Support Micro SDXC Cards Up To 128GB In Capacity

I doubt that it will only support SDXC up to 128 gigs. The reason why the 3DS could only handle up to 64 gigs was due to it being only compatible with SDHC cards. I'm sure the current 128 gig cap has to do with the fact that 256 gig Micro SD cards are fairly new to the market. Over the next few years, Micro SD card capacities WILL go up and get cheaper, and allow for greater internal storage in the process.

Assuming this rumor is true, of course.

If the NS is to be on par with PS4/XB1 then I have a feeling that might not be enough.

1. 3DS was stated to only support 32GB (or was it 64?) but people use 128GB or more without issue.
2. While not perfect, you can own multiple SDCards.
3. For a device that has to also be portable, you do not want to push a HDD in the device. Space, energy usage and price all go up. I think its a good trade-off to be forced to use SDCards vs having a larger, maybe 500GB built-in HDD. Likely, this will actually support 512 SD Cards anyways based on 3DS difference.

Exactly.

It isn't a trade-off, it's a trade-up if it eliminates/reduces loading times and installations.

Sony/MS should copy it.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Couldn't a NS cartridge contain both read and write memory to solve this problem?

A smaller write memory for the patches in that setup. Nintendo themselves like to sell DLC or apply some patches. So they would have to counter this negative in some way.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

GTA IV - 16GB
x4
GTA V - 65GB
x4
GTA VI ~ 260GB

That will be 6 disks that need installing using old tech or 1 cartridge if MS/Sony get with the times.

That is not nearly enough - PS4/XBO 500GB systems struggle with space. Not to mention that SD cards of that size are actually quite expensive.

You wont have to install games though, which means if you stay "physical" copies of games, they wont take up space.

In that light even a small amount of space could seem large.

This will basically just effect those people that mostly buy digital copies of games.

How do you know you won't have to install, though?

For digital, you'll have to have a lot of cards this way.

Why not 2, or even 4 slots for SD cards?
128x4 should be enough. And is way cheaper than 32 to 64 Gb in storage(i mean, having the 4 slots, not with the sd cards included)

Im assumeing because Cartridges can "read" (access) whats stored on them, much faster than a blu-ray drive can read things, it means you wont have to "install" the game to the hard drive (to help with that).

I cant imagine Nintendo lauching a 64GB console (the switch) and forceing you to install games before you play them.

I just cant..... no its much more likely you play the games off of the cartridge.

That's literally what Pyro as Bill was suggesting when he said the bit about 512GB game cards. It's basically propietary memory and there's no way they'd get it cheap enough.

The SD cards aren't proprietary. The cart that allows the SD would be and would cost about $5. Use your own SD cards.

You're ignoring the fact that large games don't have to be installed when using a cart therefore you don't need the HD space reqd for XB/PS4.

Unless you think that the game card slot will be able to read SD cards, and it definitely won't be able to, it will basically be propietary momory.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh wait.

You mean a game card with a physical micro SD card slot built into it? That would make for a really clumbsy user experience, but I guess that might work. Though a workaround to all of that would have been to just let the SD card they already have built into the system read larger SD cards.

So that's not happening either, even though it's better than nothing.

"If MS/Sony get with the times". Amazing. Now Nintendo is revolutionizing everything because they use SD cards, and everyone not doing the same is "behind the times". Sure, I love this way of thinking.

And Nintendo fans get angry when we say that some of them are.... let's say... "too enthusiastic"?
