Forums - Gaming Discussion - Article feedback and suggestions

Hi there.

As you may have already guessed from the title of this thread, I'm the guy whose written a bunch of articles on a variety of topics for the site since early last year. Now, I'm very happy about how they've turned out and people's response to them has been very nice. However, there are a few thing I'd like to ask people's opinions on.

First, I'll soon be done with Final Fantasy and will be moving on to other series and topics covering the history of video games. Therefore, I'd like to know what topics you would like to see me cover in the future? There are already a few subjects I'm considering, but nothing is set in stone yet. It can be full series like Final Fantasy, single games that aren't necessarily a part of any larger series, specific developers, or something else entirely.

Second, if you have any general feedback on the articles you'd like to give, that's always welcome.

First off, congratulations on the success and great feedback you've been receiving for your articles. They're very well-written and insightful for FF fans and people just interested in the history of the franchise.

Yeah, I think doing spin-offs is a fantastic idea! I'd personally prefer just the bigger spin-offs like the ones you mentioned already but I'm sure there are some people who probably would like an even more in-depth look at the lesser known titles.

Quick question. Are you going to cover Crisis Core? I have some mixed feelings on that game and its impact on the FFVII compilation and would be delighted to see another well though out opinion on the game.

Also, you should totes cover the Persona series! I think a series of articles on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise would bring in some "interesting" conversations as well. xD

Anyway, those were just a few of my thoughts. Thanks for the wonderful FF articles though, keep it up!

Hey, dude! At best, I'd say the spin-off titles - at the very least, and the very most - deserve a brief mentioning in the article of whichever mainline title they best apply to. Since this is a chronological piece, mashing them together based on release date would make the most sense. Another point you could consider is using FF universes together, which would mean putting all the Fabula Nova Crystalis (sp) games together - although you would have a preeetty big article then. You could also put all the mobile games together. Or maybe one giant spin-off article?
To summarize: Briefly mention the spin-off titles. They should gain as much coverage as the attention they generated.

As for the future:
-how about a series covering the shift in popularity in the gaming market? As JRPGs seem to fall in popularity, military FPS rise. You can look at the best-selling titles list for each console in our database to see how the top-tens shifted from being JRPG/Platformers/Racing/Fighting (PS1) to FPS/Sports/Action/WRPG. Similarly, from Japanese to Western popularity. From Sony-published to 3rd party-published. Why did this happen, and how did it unfold?

*edit* - If you already wrote something along those lines, my apologies. I haven't been active on this site for a few months so I would not have seen it.

#1 Amb-ass-ador

Spin-offs are ok (Dissidia, Crisis Core, Crystal Chronicles, etc...). But don't mix the renamed games like the SaGa ones (FF Legend for the GB) or the Mana (FF Adventure for the GB) with the reall FF games and spin-offs. Those are only part of FF history in the west. But they have in fact nothing to do with the series.

Just my two cents.

As for what game series you should do next, what about Castlevania, Metroid, Suikoden, Shenmue or Metal Gear when it comes to games, or Square-Enix, Nintendo, Sega (or AM2), Enix, or Konami, when it comes to game companies?

About the first point, im more than happy with the work you asre making, which is excellent by the way. Now, other series that i would like you to cover would be Kingdom Hearts.i think there is alot of interesting stories there to cover and would make for an interesting read.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Thanks. I'm considering writing an article specifically on the compilation of FF VII during this series, at least the ones I can actually say something about. Before Crisis might be a bit difficult one to say anything since I've never played it.

Persona seems like a very good idea, maybe the whole Shin Megami Tense series. Sonic as well. Thanks for the ideas!

That idea on the shift in popularity sounds very interesting. Would be a pretty big undertaking, but I really like it. Thanks!

Don't worry about the unofficial Final Fantasy-games. Both SaGa and Mana-games would be their own series if I ever decide to write about them. Those suggestions are good as well. Konami would make a very interesting article considering all that's happened in the last few years.

I agree. Kingdom Hearts is a very good topic, and with Kingdom Hearts 3 coming up at some point it would be a good time to look at the series as a whole as well.

You might want to look into mobile Final Fantasy games too. With everything going mobile, it might be interesting to have a view on Final Fantasy going mobile as well.

As for future ideas, Metal Gear/Hideo Kojima are some obvious names to consider. Duke Nukem, especially due to Forever, could also be somewhat interesting. The series isn't that big anymore though, so in that regard it might not be an ideal choice. Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian might be interesting too, depending on what you can dig up. And Dwarf Fortress, and EVE Online! Those games are just ridiculous... in a good way. They're somehow special due to their scale and all. The history of multiplayer and the community side of games could be interesting too, or if you're really ambitious, you could add in single-player too for the history of how games are played.

Just a suggestion but a Silent Hill retrospective would be interesting. SH2 is one of my favorite gaming experiences ever and SH3 was good but then I totally lost track of the series and it seemed to fragment.

And if you wanted to educate people on one of the greatest series--and tragedies--in gaming, then you could cover Suikoden. Not a lot of people have played those games, though, so I can understand if that seems too niche.

I like the articles so far, hopefully they say something positive about my favourite FF games which are coming up soon though

Not really interested in the spin offs, since I haven`t really played any of them. But I`d probably read articles for them if you did them.

As for other ideas, I think a Rare/Free Radical one could be pretty interesting. Going from the rise to prominence of Rare, especially with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark and then all the mess with the Microsoft takeover and a chunk of the staff leaving to form Free Radical instead and still making great shooters until they made the mega flop that was Haze. And then finally all the mess with their takeover by Crytek and then Deep Silver.

Rare and Free Radical would be an interesting topic to look into at some point.

I might write an article about the mobile games, although it would be somewhat different than the ones on the console Final Fantasy-games, since I've never played any of the mobile ones so there wouldn't be as much of a personal view on them

Since I haven't played some of the other spin off, I'd perhaps be more interested in reading about them because of that fact. Such as Final Fantasy 7 Before Crisis, for example.

As for future game series, the Suikoden series, or Shin Megami Tensei series would be nice.

I think I will cover Suikoden and Silent Hill at some point. Shin Megami Tensei is a very interesting topic as well, but the series is a pretty complicated mess of different sub-series and spin-offs. I'll still probably look into it at some point in some form.
