*edit: This isnt how most gamers understand the world "generation" applied to consoles. Its not just about the 1 product, being another in a line from the last one of its kinde. People are talking past one another, because they have differnt understandings of what the word means applied to consoles.
Nintendo guys here are saying Generations = d. Others are saying Generations = b.
Both are right. Nintendos next system is their 9th. But its not a 9th gen (it wont exist to compete against PS5 or XBtwo, but rather 8th gen systems, PS4 & XB1) = its a 8th gen system in that sense.
It depends on how you think the word generations is used with consoles. |
With Nintendo it is their 6th generation coming up with NES, SNES, N64, Wii, and Wii U being their first 5. With Playstation, they're on their fourth, thus the name PS4, very easy to follow. Microsoft doesn't play by the rules, they started with generation 0, moved on to their 360th generation, and now they're on generation 1.

Okay, thanks. I started with Vic 20 but when I was a kid there was no internet, obviously, and we didn't gather around my neighborhood classifying game machine generations. I was not sure how far back people counted. I figured I was a dinosaur. |
Generations didn't really start being a thing until the NES overturned the second crash, the reason being is that gen 1 and 2 overlapped heavily and were side by side until the first gaming crash (1977) killed gen 1, gen 2 went on to be killed off by the second gaming crash.
Vic 20 was 1981 so would be Gen 2, ironically we maybe seeing the last of the usual gaming generations the way things are going.
Okay its their 7th.... point still stands.
People are useing the word "generations" differntly.

Generations didn't become a thing until Sega branded the Mega Drive as a 16-bit generation console. There was no talk of 16-bit consoles being "the third gen" until much much later.

I think you should research gaming history the were 2 gaming crashes, one in 1977 and one in 1983.

16bit consoles are the 4th gen, 8bit are the third gen, initially NES/MS were seen as the first gen but later people started acknowledging the consoles before them.

I have never heard about it. Not much of a crash. The Atari 2600 was released in 1977. Seems like manufacturers flood the market with pong consoles that affected a few cartridge based consoles.
