Forums - Gaming Discussion - Prediction: First party Scorpio games will run dynamic resolutions

Since they employed this method on their biggest exclusives, I'm going to say yes, many of the Scorpio games will probably use this method. Personally, I prefer Sony's checkerboard method as it will be a constant res, so there will be much less chance of loss of image quality.

dynamic resolution would allow games to run native 4k but drop down a few % in resolution in favour of a more stable framerate, I do hope they use this, 4k is not something you just easely do. I agree they will proberbly use dynamic resolution as they should.

If the Scorpio isnt strong enough for native 4k, they will just do what sony does.
Upscale it the rest of the way (dynamic res. or not).

The problem with that is theyre attacking Sony with "its not native 4k" right now.
If this turns out to be how it is, they will end up looking like hypocrites.

Why can't MS use the same method?  If they use 50% checkerboard, they have just that much more power left for FX/FPS.
Or instead of 50% checkerboard, they can use 70-90% checkerboard of full-render pixels.
(with remaining "blank" pixels algorhythmically resolved from neighbors and temporal AA)
And rather than dynamic resolution (upscaling) they can dynamically vary the population of checkerboard (e.g. 70-100%).
Which won't have conventional upscaling artifacts, and will simply be closer to full 4K than PS4Pro's 50% checkerboard.
I'm just not seeing how Scorpio having more power available is anything but an advantage here.
They could even concentrate "full render" pixels in areas of interest, e.g. center of screen for certain game types.

1080p x 4=4k

I think there's enough headroom for native 4K gaming on Scorpio, at least for the ones that are native 1080p on the Xbone.

Yep I would take a checkerboard upscaled 1440P with better effects over a native 4k source anyway. I would even go as far that I would take better visual effects and animations over a higer resolution than 1080p in general. I am fine with a stable 30fps though.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Well, if dynamic resolution is needed to run at 60 fps at 4K on demanding games, i'm sure no one will lose sleep over that since the lowest the native assets will be will still trump any other option in the console market.

That said, in games a GTX 1080is about 15% over a GTX1070, which is closer to the optimized spec of a Scorpio. Once development starts around bespoke Scorpio, that 30 fps locked at native 4K looks like a reality based on that video.

A 4K native campaign and a dynamic res multiplayer at 4K is something console gamers will be happy with coming from 1080p or below. It'll look fabulous on a 4K TV.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Consoles I PS4 Pro I Xbox One S 2TB I Wii U I Xbox 360 S

Unless it's a low demanding game we already know it won't be stone set to 4k on Pro or Scorpio.

Checkerboard is sony patented tech, but sure MS can develop something similar.

Nope, it won't be that simple, if it were on this 9 TFlops card 4k60fps would be a breeze.

How many times have permalite showed to you that you are wrong but you keep the same narrative?

If the system is going to be native 4k on games it won't be a price that will invoke a sale I think, unless MS takes a fairly big loss on the system and I don't think that would be MS's game again, One thing that is strange where they have decided to take the first steps in revealing their "generationless" consoles is that they did it... in a generation they were so far behind their competition, I mean it isn't on Wii-U levels of being outsold but at the same time they hold just 28.2% of the console sales in the 8th generation down from 32% in the generation which featured the Wii!
I think they would do better (or far worse from a PR point of view) to look at something like a full blown sequel to Minecraft exclusively to the X1 (for a period) or else try to shell out big bucks and secure GTA6 for the first year of launch. I'm not sure but from the popularity of various things like Digital Foundry I think it's clear that those who care about every single frame rate dip are sadly the minority when it comes to buying a platform of choice and the reality is people are more drawn to where their online buddies are holed up at right now, by the time the Scorpio comes out it is only going to be 12 months worse for how likely it is that mates will be using a Sony console for their Call of Duty and Fifa games I think.

TL:DR - It wont be a 4k machine if it is going to sell imo.
