Forums - Sony Discussion - PS4 Pro’s inability to play 4K UHD discs is, no doubt, short-lived

A fanciful story, but we'll have to wait and see.

There's another reason they may want to do this: if the are selling the first PS4P shipments at cost or below cost, they will not want people to buy the console just to play UHD BR.

The ps5 is like 2 years away stop being so dramatic

Bet reminder: I bet with Tboned51 that Splatoon won't reach the 1 million shipped mark by the end of 2015. I win if he loses and I lose if I lost.

Before you dismiss the PS4 Pro out of hand, let me fill you in on a few things that you may not be aware of, because they have been hardly discussed in public so far.

The 4K UHD disc format is actually a standard Blu-Ray format.

Yes it is a standard disc format. A DISC standard.

The blu-ray drive must have the correct lens system (high numerical aperture lenses) to actually be able to read uhd disks.

The PS4 seemingly does NOT have uhd blu-ray drive mechanics. The hardware simply isn't there, end of story.

That doesn't make sense at all. Firstly, your assumption that the laser currently in the console is able to process more layers than it was built for is completely grabbed out of the air. Secondly, The PS4 has a lot more worth to Sony than any Bluray player, simply because you can consume a lot more Sony content through a PS4 than you could with a Bluray player. I don't see any reason why Sony would actively discourage people from buying the PS4. The divisions are not a rivalry.

Well, it sound similar to "lets not announce this revision/upgrade to this console too early so it doesnt hurt the sales of the current console".

Well, they didn't do that either because it wouldn't have hurt the sales anyway. Sony doesn't give a shit which console you buy from them.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

just curious: is this situation similar in any way to how the PS3 later received support for 3d Blu-ray Discs? This has always been in the back of my mind since the 4k UHD drive has been in discussion but I'm not familiar enough with these things to know for sure.

Thank you the PS4, PS4 pro or your current blu ray player which uprenders standard blu ray to 4k simply can't read UHD discs. Because of the extra layer and the fact more data is stored on each layer. 25gb vs 33gb makes a 33% difference that isn't just something that can be fixed by a firmware update.

Why would Sony who doesn't have a release date for its 4k uhd blu ray player delay UHD playback on PS4 pro with a firmware update it doesn't make sense. Not putting it in there is also questionable decision but economical viable since the format needs some time to take off and games can't take advantage of the 100gb a UHD blu ray cab store due to the old drives in the Xone and PS4.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

i doubt it.

blu ray as a whole has been a big disaster for sony. even after losing billions to trojan horse blu ray into every ps3 the market for blu ray discs has been horribly anemic. we've had years of people claming the difference between SD and HD isn't enough to care about and certainly not enough to put large amounts of money into.

UHD is dead on arrival.

i'm sorry for those couple of tech enthusiasts that always want the best and don't care how much it cost but UHD is going to be as relevant as laser disc in the grand scheme of things. as cost drop people might by 4k and UHD just because it is no more expensive than not getting 4k but the short of it is this,.. there will be no consumer rush to upgrade and companies will not be able to see them for a premium price. demand just isn't there. 4k will only roll out to consumers by the slow momentum of people needing to replace a broken tv and not having the option to not buy 4k.

UHD not in ps4 pro is just sony not wanting to spend ~$15 per console on a feature that has a market value of ~$0.10.

don't believe me? just watch the relative sales of playstation and xbox this holiday. the needle isn't going to move in favor of xbox due to the slim having UHD.

It's Sony's biggest fuck up this generation. Really disappointed in them here. Streaming 4K looks worse than 1080P blu rays. Why bother making a standalone UHD blu ray player? Just make the PS4 Sony's only UHD blu ray player and please gamers and videophiles alike and take their dollars. Sigh....

Why would SONY railroaed consumers into getting PS4 if they're not interested in video games? That is like SONY only offering bundled PS4's with Controllers you dont need, and a game you dont want for 500 instead of just a standalone console you do want for 299.

Why would Sony railroad anyone into getting a PS4Pro AND a 4K BR player?

The answer is the same. They want money.
