Forums - Gaming Discussion - The 4k Confutation

Am I the only one who thinks this drive for 4k gaming is a gross waste of resources? And that in the grand scheme of things it's one of the most irrelevant metrics to use and measure the quality of a gaming engine or a game period. I can think of at least 5 things I would rather see more of than a 4k resolution.

This is modern gaming in a nutshell, just a dick measurement fest. The bigges polygon count, the highest resolution or framerate. It gets boring after a couple years.

This thread is a good way of taking one news piece and using it to lump in every PC gamer.
Fact is with such a 4K set up that can run "The Newest" games in 4K@30FPS can also most likely run games from 2 years ago in 4K@60fps.
They also have the option of 1440P@60FPS for all their newer games or 4K@30fps.
Im sure that the biggest half who likes FPS will go for the 60FPS option so then they are not lying when they say "Ill be running this game in 60FPS". The ones who care about Res will run it in 4K@30FPS and they also are not lying since they are most likely not the same ones saying "ill run this in 60FPS".
Now whats the point of this thread again?.

You couldnt be more wrong.

This thread isnt just a resction to the DF piece. That was just the final straw showing just how bad it really is.

Have you been on any PC performance thread on NeoGAF of late? or even the numerous posters on multiple forums saying how try are ok with 4k@30fps?

Or the numerous PC folks that would show screen grabs of their rigs running a game at some ridiculous rez that in truth they couldn't even play the game at 20fps.

If you think that there isn't a problem with the majority of the PC gaming space who seem to talk more about specs and I than actually talking about the quality of a game then you truly are lost.

1080p and 60 frames per second is more than enough.

Weird. I'm perfectly fine running my 4K games at High settings and no AA for that better framerate when needed.

I think Scorpio is going to benefit the 4K market in general. We already seeing how the MS exclusives have targeted a FuryX/980Ti for their 4K settings. As more developers hone in around that kind of power, less will go wasted.

Lets face it, developers are very inefficient with PC hardware, you can see this by the scaling differences across resolutions.

PC I i7 3770K @4.5Ghz I 16GB 2400Mhz I GTX 980Ti FTW

Consoles I PS4 Pro I Xbox One S 2TB I Wii U I Xbox 360 S

DF doesn't talk for the entire PC Community... And most are eyeing 4k 60fps if possible but unless you have the most powerful hardware, you can't so most PC gamers either play at 1080p 60fps or 1440p 60fps... So I don't get why would you call them hypocrites.

As a PC gamer, 4k 30fps isn't acceptable but it has to be that way until we get hardware that is powerful enough to run it at 60fps. (Or turn some settings down). But that is why I don't own a 4k monitor

Also the drive for 4k gaming is worth it imo. As resolution goes up, the image quality looks better and better. Due to the high ppi, people need less AA than they ever would which allows non blurry images. That with HDR support makes the experience even better. Not sure why you hate 4k so much...

No your truly lost. But i knew when i seen this thread was from you what its contents was going to be.

This is no different then Sony gamers acting like res didnt matter last gen when 360 used to have the higher res. Its also no different then how Sony gamers used to act like 1080P didnt matter, or how 4K didnt matter but now they are big deals to them. Oh wait am i generalizing a bunch of Sony gamers into the one pot?. Welcome to your thread.....

I dont gwt this "no differemce" nonsense...

so basically you are saying dont say anuthing because some other people do somwthing similar?

Well feel free to make a thread and call them out instesd of coming into mine and saying I shouldn't say something because it's the supposed status quo.

And yes I'm generalizing because I'm talking about the majority that i have seen and what I've noticed. And unless you are blatantly in denial, then you would at the very least admit that the majority of PC gamers on forum talk more about specs than actually about games. And this thread isn't just about them, but about how I feel that 4k gaming isn't worth it.

Anyways. feel free to think whatever you want to think. Go right ahead and turn this into some kinda stupid fanboy war....

This is the reason I'm going for Neo over Scorpio, I know they aren't going for resolution but instead framerate and a little extra to throw at VR and even then there is a good chance we will get games that are 1440p if they are linear and non VR but I'm really in it for the 1080p 60fps standard and most likely 1080p/90fps or 900p/120fps on non VR games. Hopefully games will even start to add sliders or res versus frames presets. Project CARS done it to a degree on the ps4 with a good lot of effects and it did effect the frame rate noticably. And the rendering effects on UC4....it can be done.

In 8th gen, it's clear who's foing for framerate instead of resolution. MS games mostly depends on framerates rather than resolution.

Yeah, taking EG article (and no less by Leadbetter) and then lumping all PC gamers into same category is...well, I'll be polite...really weak.

Just like on all platforms, there are folks who are happier with higher res over frame rate and vice versa, and any of that over settings.

No, not for consoles at least, I think the power from Neo and Scorpio would be much better spent elsewhere.

1000% this. I see no value at all in 4K for consoles. Power pissing contests aside my TV set up means I am right on the edge of getting a visual benefit from 1080p compared to lower HD resolutions.

I much prefer power resoources go into better AA, better lighting and textures, longer draw distances and more stable (if not higher) frame rates.

My current 1080p TV will last me several more years, and most likely I will replace it with another 1080p TV unless by the time I decide to buy another TV 1080p no longer exists as an option, which probably means the high end TVs will be 8K, in which case I'll cheap out with 4K. I always buy a TV at least one step behind the top resolution because I find that to be the best value for money.

No. They HAVE to lower res to get the framerate because of lack of power. Also, Neo NEEDS to be aimed at framerate because of PSVR. MS are going for 4k which will impact frame rate.

Halo aimed for 60fps regardless of resolution. Forza has made Motorsport a definite 1080p60fps experience.

Gears MP is going 60fps for the first time. Killer Instinct never gave up 60fps.

In case you didn't notice, most of MS big IPs are big on multiplayer and gameplay is what MS focus on more than anything.
