Forums - Gaming Discussion - NMS - What's Missing, a proper blind-hate free discussion (we can do this)

We need to start doing this more because VGC is becoming a shit hole. This blind hate mentality needs to stop and it's something that hasn't just began with NMS. If you only plan on posting because you just like hating it or come here with a aggressive and shit manner, don't bother commenting at all. We don't want this ending up in a mess of a thread like the others.

So I'm playing NMS and loving it and couldn't really put my finger why all the hate and claims of lies. The forum is awash with negative threads and posts but the vast majority of people posting the hate are hating on it because they enjoying spreading the hate not because they want to bring anything meaningful to these forums. This type of blind hate threads/posts with no substance wasn't getting to the bottom of anything or creating a place to discuss it, just fanning the flames. My aim of this thread is to discuss what was shown and promised to the final product in a civil manner and we need to report anybody that doesn't comply.

After asking a few times, somebody finally linked me (thank captain_yuri) to a list of stuff missing and damn is a big list. What I want to talk about is the stuff on this list, possibility on them being patched and how it's effected your game and how it would improve the game if it was there. You can talk about individual stuff or about the list as a whole.

To note: I don't think Sean lied, some people like to take this stance on him but I think what he promised he intended to have in the game. Budget and/or time probably ran out and some of what he missed out can be patched. Similar to Peter Molyneux he ended up overpromising but thought it was possible to do in 4 years, even with his small team.

Here's the list;

Landing on Asteroids 1 "Yeah, at the moment you can land on asteroids."

NPC Ships Launching From The Ground 1 Shows an NPC ship lauching from something other than a dock, implying they can land anywhere.
In-Atmosphere Freighters w/ Battling 1 2 Freighters traveling through a planet's atmosphere, also being attacked.

Trade, Resources and Crafting

Feature/Element Source(s) Relevant Quote/Comment

The Ability To Play The Game Solely As A Trade or Solely in Space 1 2 3 "But you can also [...] just not gather resources. Perhaps you're the type of person who just never wants to do that because it seems a bit laborious, or you just don't like visiting planets and you just want to play a space game, so you can do that if you want, just going from space station to space station..."
Crafting That Has Complexity 1 "When we release the game, we're not telling people 'here are all the formulas,' we're just letting players loose, and a little bit like minecraft people can figure out those rules themselves..."
Find Elements By Checking Galactic Map 1 "If you're searching for an element, a great tool there is the galactic map. The first thing that's incredibly helpful [is] if someone has been to that system before, in visiting it, they'll discover it, and then if they choose to, they will upload that information, and now anyone who goes to that system [...] is going to know more about that systm"

I think one of the main things that's missing, even though it doesn't change the experience much, is that planet/moons don't orbit or rotate. I hope this can be patched.

As someone who has been involved in game development in the past I really feel for Sean Murray, coming from Joe Danger to this project and the sudden massive publicity the project and he himself gained must have been exceptionally daunting and put incredible pressure on him.

Luckily I have never been involved in any type of PR, because I can certainly see that being both a Developer and being actively involved in interviews and PR could certainly cause a lot of issues as it has apparently done so with No Man Sky.

During the development of a project you get so many great ideas, so many features you toy with, features that sound amazing, that you test and prototype. Sean Murray was no doubt actively involved in these processes, and as they were the things that on paper sounded fantastic he chose to talk about them during interviews.

I firmly believe he was never purposefully deceitful, it's just that during development features get cut, features get lost or sometimes they even get forgotten, oops. There's something amazing you fully intend to put into the game, that you have a functioning example of in a test build, and as such if involved in PR you'll want to talk about it. But then you realise that making it work on a larger scale isn't going to be viable. Whether mechanically it doesn't interact well with the rest of the game, or whether performance wise or because of the immense workload it is unviable.

I believe the biggest problem with this project is:

Sean Murray being actively involved in both Development of the Title and PR.

A small team suddenly being thrust into the spotlight receiving far more attention then they could have ever expected and could ever be comfortable with. Being put under so much pressure because of the amount of people and the amount of hype those people chose to put behind the game.

Because of that immense exposure and public awareness of their project they felt incredibly pressured to release the game, it was a phenomenally ambitious project for such a small team coming off the back of a title like Joe Danger, and it clearly still needed a little more time.

At the end of the day though, what they achieved was remarkable considering who they were, the size of their team, what their previous projects were, the massive pressure and exposure they were under and the sheer scope of their project.

Updates could certainly add everything they talked about to this game, the beauty of procedural generation is one little change to the code can change the entire universe. They should have waited at least a few more months to release the game, but I can understand why they did not.

Our own solar system provides more variety on environments than all the planets/moons/ in no man's sky. And that's something I am really sad about. The wether system is a joke. It's raining acid without clouds. It get's stormy without having issues to walk around. There are so many things missing in this game.

Different size of a planets have no influence on gravity. It's always the same on everything.

Sentinals appear out of nowhere and attack you, because you took a rune.

The music and atmosphere in game lacks the bit of mystery.

This game provides far more interesting planets to explore. And that was on a NES!

It's just something we're going to have to deal with while on this site man. Just a bunch of people pushing agendas and skating on the thin line. Those certain individuals won't get away with it though because the mods eventually will pull the trigger.

Back on topic, I know they're are going to update the hell out of the game so if you haven't bought yet, just wait for the patches.

Pretty much what you said but the online features would really be at the top. I'm sure they could at least provide seed numbers which you can share in which you can send to friends. The community aspect is pretty lacking.

What online features would you like to see and what would you like to be able to do?

OMG How can this happen??

Yesterday I saw a large scale space battle as I warped into the system. There were two large freighters and several smaller ships. I tried to help take out the smaller ships but shot the freighter by mistake and then started to get DPd. So I did what any other person would do, I got the hell out of there and escaped to the closest planet.
