Forums - Gaming Discussion - Can No Mans Sky be game of the year?

This game seems to be getting better and better and with promised future updates it can only get even more better. I'll save my final judgement for when I get my hands on it and the critic reviews come in but right now it seems like a genuine contender for GOTY.

IF it did manage to get GOTY it would be a pretty good achievement for such a small team and a kick to the nuts for the 100+ people development teams. My potential contenders for GOTY are Uncharted 4, NMS and Gears 4.

What do you think? What is your potential game of the year?

It could be, its very populair with streamers and viewers, so it might be the peoples choice game of the year, also I think critics might like it altough I do believe it was overhyped slightly to much by Sony it looks good.

It will be very hard to be "THE" game of the year with Final Fantasy, Mafia, Uncharted, Gears of war and so on, but in its cathegory it has a chance.

I think it can but it depends on how many reviewers 'get it'. Hundreds and hundreds of people have been watching the streams and going crazy, even those that were on the fence. There's an addiction involved here similar to Pokemon. Some are obsessed with seeing new gun, new ships, new planets, but the majority are obsessed with seeing new creatures and the first thing every streamer does is take snapshots and post them on Facebook. Facebook will already be filled with these creatures and come launch we're going to see a deluge of pics.

The reason I say 'get it' is because of some of the comments I've heard from Polygon and Kotaku. One of the streamers on Kotaku actually said, after playing the game for 10 minutes and witnessing a starship flying overhead, 'do you think that's another player?'. The ignorance is incredible considering information about this game has been out there for such a long time. She actually thought, in a universe of 18 quintillion planets and only about 5 people playing, it was another player. Seriously stupid but hopefully not an indication of the ignorance they'll bring to the review. The guy playing with here was loving it so that's a good sign.

The PS5 Exists.

I can't see it happening, maybe for some people, but I can't think of a game that used procedural generation being a contender for game of the year from multiple outlets/people. There's just too much of a RnG element which will make people's experiences wildly different and very much what you're prepared to put in will affect what you get out of it.

I love that element, the not knowing how my playthrough will go, and knowing that it will be different from the next guy feels special and I'm most deffinitely looking forward to it. Ultimately though tailored experiences are typically better, or more well received, plus it's having to go up against games like Uncharted.

Don't ruin the moment

Depends on how broken it is at launch. Leakers have had a few bad things to say (mostly positive tho) but HG are also working on a big day one patch and advising the leaked copy is not representative of the day one game. So who knows until the patch goes out.

No. I very much doubt it. However, I am finding it hard to recall a game this year that even comes close to last years top 3. Uncharted being the only one that gets close to 2015s the Witcher 3, MGS5 and bloodborne. Haven't played Overwatch yet but I reckon that'll win the most awards.

Just like GTA IV that is one game we will look upon in a few years and thinking how the hell did that game get that high rating?

Its minecraft in space.... set in the biggest "open world universe" game ever?
Yes it could be a GoTY.

I hope not, I still don't see why so many people are so excited for it. But hey I guess GOTY is a popularity contest and not actually the best game that year so I guess NMS will at least be a contender.

It might win an award here or there, but I don't the game will have the kind of wide reaching appeal to win many of them.

That said, I'm still excited for the game.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

No, we will look back wondering how it could have have even been considered a "bad MGS game". The game is strong and brilliant.

The word you are looking for is boring. It's impressive, but boring.
