Yes, but the set circumstances for the NX is set differently.
Just like how them announcing NX in a Direct is a completely new thing for Nintendo, showing up with that bombshell at tgs would be similarly a completely new thing.

Fair enough, but they had huge showings at E3 prior to release (at least 3ds and Wii U).

I completely agree they win in the aspect of being able to control what is shown, how it is presented, being able to add entertainment value, ect a live show does not allow for. I've always been an avid defender of full on Direct Nintendo. Even the E3's everyone else seemed to be begging for live events.
That said, I still can't believe then not releasing ANYTHING for E3 about the NX in any form other than saying BOTW was going to simultaneously release with the Wii U version next year. You simply cannot duplicate the exposure. Now they're missing the last major gaming event too, I just don't know if that's a good thing or not.

The circumstances are a bit different though, as they won't have a gaming event like E3 to push hype like the wii u did.
If they do their own event, we should know about it this month, because the invitation are going to be sent out to the press a month in advance.
Now if they do a reveal at an already existing event.

And that's pretty much it. There is the PGW in November in france, but it's waaaayy too late.
They could also just do a direct but that would never get as much press as a real event. They need to show it directly to the press, and make them play it.
Also, from what we heard about the device, it really has been tailored for the japanese market. So I think it will be in japan.
So my guess is still a private event in japan, at the same time as the TGS. If it's that, we should have a confirmation in the next two weeks
At the Apple Keynote in September, Tim Cook will announce "one more thing" and then boom, Nintendo comes around and shows NX with some partnership with Apple and the world freaks out and shit!

Neither will NX, or anything else since a hybrid isn't possible.
