Forums - Microsoft Discussion - W10 Anniversary Update Removes Features, Cortana Always On

So glad I switched to Mac a year ago.

Official member of VGC's Nintendo family, approved by the one and only RolStoppable. I feel honored.

Great, so I dug deep to turn all that shit off, only for MS telling me I shouldn't do that. Getting really sick with Windows 10.

Worst OS ever keeps getting worse, no surprise here.

I'm a real fan of windows 10 and find it a big improvement on the earlier windows.

I wonder though how users will cope with slower hardware. Windows 10 runs very well on older hardware, better than windows 7 and 8 it seems but if they force enable cpu intensive features it will ruin the operating system for them.

Maybe that's the point forcing people off older hardware so they buy new hardware that gives Microsoft another licensing fee.

I'm using a AMD A8 based laptop from HP. It actually was supplied with both windows 7 and 8.1 for some reason and tried both before upgrading to windows 10 and have to say windows 10 is fantastic in comparison. Gaming frame rates seem better and I can run just about any modern game on this humble laptop as the screen is only 720p and keeping the detail to low. Fallout 4 for example. It has 8GB of dual channel memory and a quad core 3ghz cpu and just about usable radeon graphics that seem miles better than my earlier i3 laptop with integrated intel graphics.

Normally when Microsoft make unpopular additions or changes to operating systems there are workarounds soon after like the original windows 8.

There are no workarounds here, they just took them away. Microsoft's entire strategy here is to take control away from the people. Windows 10 has been very unstable for me in comparison to 8.1 and I feel like they went for style over function in Windows 10.

Hackintosh? I'm so glad I switched to mac years ago and don't have to deal with this crap anymore. Plus macOS is great operating system.

It's just a shame that macs usually don't pack much punch in the graphics department and have become increasingly difficult to upgrade yourself.

I'd say there's a significantly larger percent of users that are affected by this, solely out of privacy concerns. Lest we forget the NSA datamining scandal that I think played a large part in crumpling the x1's launch (Microsoft was one of the corporations involved with that, along with trying to launch a console that was "always on" with a mandatory camera staring back at you).

The ironic part being that I was thinking about how I wish Linux had a simple distro with enough apps to justify a switch lol.

Edit: Actually, the first and fourth things mentioned seem significant as well. I wouldn't want pre installed apps plastered on my computer and it would irk me to have software that isn't removeable - which is something that greatly bothers me about most android smart phones.

Going by that this patch is a non issue since people shouldn't even have any version of Windows installed.

If I don't use Windows on my PC, I'm still using android on my phone.

If I don't use android, I'm still using google as my search engine.

If I don't use a search engine, I'm still getting tracked by cross site cookies.

If I disable cookies, I'm still sending my IP to foreign servers and my ISP to track my movements.

If I stop using the internet and go outside, I'm still gonna be seen by public cameras.

If I somehow avoid public cameras, I'm still going to be filmed by passerbys or dashboard cameras.

If I stay inside with no internet and barred windows am I still living?

People should be less concerned about applications recording their movements and more about what information they're actually presenting.

After the whole NSA scandal my only feeling was pity for the poor NSA to have to waste bandwidth and storage for my garbage data.

It's clearly not an issue for you, I get that but you're taking what I said out of context and over exaggerating. For instance, just about everything you listed can be turned off or isn't much of an issue - cell phones can disable their GPS. Web Browsers not only have "Do Not Track" modes but also have incognito modes or alternatively you can straight up deny any and all cookies, wipe the browser after each use, there's really a ton of work arounds for that. As far as public cameras go, well, those are only placed in extremely busy and public locations. Contrast that against an operating system that's designed for home use, can interpret what you say, send data to the cloud and then have an app installed on your desktop that you never asked about. That is a huge fucking difference man and a potentially huge invasion of privacy - the kind of privacy that would be unreasonable to expect where public cameras are.

Its the principal of the sitatuation. If that's not a concern for you, alright, but hopefully you can at least see things from the perspective of someone that does not feel comfortable with these new precedents we're allowing these companies to get away with. And on that note to what end? This might have been an easier pill to swallow if some of us were at least given a choice in the matter which there still should be. W7 doesn't have these issues, w8 doesn't have these issues, so why not just sick with those right? Er.... Wait.... Microsoft just forced some of those people to update. They no longer have a say in the matter. <---And that's a big fucking deal.

Im not asking you to agree. Youve made it clear that you don't care much about your privacy. Hopefully, you can still see where others might come from on the topic.

This post says what I feel. Seriously, why are they forcing Cortana on people if they don't even care who she is? They're not porting any Halo games to PC anytime soon.

Because shes a A.I that datamines you, and MS wants to sell your info ? I know thats probably just me being paranoid but still...

She's not an A.I that datamines you. She's an A.I that's bond with you, then turn into a Yandare when she goes into rampant.

I really dont like them having the ability to install and uninstall shit on my PC. I don't use Cortana and I would like option to turn it off. I don't want to be datamined nor do I want them to have all of my personal data. I do see they are smart enough to disable windows 10 store on Enterprise and Education editions. There is no way an IT dept is going to allow auto installing 3rd party software.

Pro 5.1 perhaps?
