Forums - Gaming Discussion - Eurogamer: Nintendo NX is a portable console with detachable controllers (It also connects to your TV, and runs cartridges)

Somebody on GAF brought up a good point. How is Just Dance supposed to work on this? Lol.

Set the system down on a table. Detach the controller sides. Play the game.

If it's near a TV, my guess is you can stream the video signal to the TV instead.

"Playing smash is going to be awesome on this thing.

Said the villain.

"Also, I look forward to going back to single screen Pokemon battles."

Also said the villain, once more.

Nintendo can continue to scale their tech with new mobile chips too.

A Tegra X2/Parker level chip is not something that's going to be inside a phone anytime soon, it would melt an iPhone casing in 30-45 minutes.

I know this dude dont worry. Pretty much the way i see it Nintendo is the first console maker to join this ever growing market and they already have a solid Handheld base to grow off now they can tap into the Tablet Market.

I just dont know what MS or Sony is going to do to counter such a move, well i guess MS has their Windows 10 thing. But what has Sony got to move forword into this market?.

I guess Sony better Hope consoles will never die and that they will always have a place in it.

Actually out of the big three.. Sony is actually moving ahead by making PlayStation itself a platform, not  console.... PlayStation is soon going to be offered on various smart boxes and smart TVs..... Ps Vue is somewhat taking off on ps4, and ps now is probably going to bring HD console gaming to mobile and tablet space shortly.... As ps now is a Netflix for games service with super high quality streaming..... They have all the tools and have been gradually expanding their brand outside of the console space

So how powerful can the NX mini tablet be?  If we can expect a reasonable jump from Tegra X1 (512 gflop), maybe a cutdown X2 for the portable could be around 700 gflops fixed (still not perform to full chip power even when docked).  Then the NX dock will use the 2nd and full chip capability, and lets say a conservatvie 900gflps-1TF.  Combined could be around PS4 level or comfortably ahead of XB1.  I don't know how combined chips could work, if at all, but again the language used with connecting to a "brain" could mean getting NX help from a superior source.

It'll be interesting to find out about the X2's specs regardless to see the gains made from 20nm to 16nm.

No. Flops is simply silly in your comparison.

Tegra K1/X1 and it's derivatives could have 10 Teraflops of theoretical performance, it still will not beat a PS4.

What do you think the NX handheld will have as a screen? My guess is a 720 with 3:2 or 15:9 (like the 3DS) form factor with 5inch or less, some people believe in 540p 16:9 or so. With that given a X1 is more than you need to drive those small displays.

Going by Tegra's specs, 720P and lower will be the norm... Tegra doesn't have the fillrate or the bandwidth to drive higher resolutions.

I see a huge problem when it comes to the games' sizes and portable gaming.

This thing clearly won't have a 3.5" HDD and a 2.5" HDD sounds unlikely as well. So how the hell are you supposed to fit multiple digital games on that thing when you're on the go? Sounds like cartridges is the only way to go then. Unless you want to pay 350€ for a 512GB sd card.

Mechanical Hard Drive's won't happen. They consume far to much energy, nsoisy and prone to failure in portable devices.

Nintendo will likely have MicroSD card support to expand internal storage, augmented by cartridge games.

I'm sure it'll have atleast 32GB internal which is enough to hold multiple Wii U games.

That's a Wii U. If you haven't been paying attention... Games have started to balloon in size on almost every other platform. :P

I am so torn about this.. I really really like the concept, I think it is really really cool. Shared library is fantastic and so on. Low power though.. assuming it's 1Tflop it's about three times stronger than the Wii U an tons stronger than the 3DS. That's still enough for me to get it day one.

Based on what? Teraflops? No.

nVidia stated the Tegra K1 was roughly 50% faster than the Xbox 360/Playstation 3.
But it had inferior fill rate and memory bandwidth amongst other things.

The Tegra X1 was 50% faster to double the performance of the K1 depending on situation... And unlike the K1 it had superior fillrate, geometry, bandwidth etc'.

That's what we can expect relative to last generation consoles.

If it has the Tegra X1 chip as suspected, its a lot less powerful than X1/PS4 but a lot more powerful than 7th gen machines.

Which is fine for stuff people generally want on Nintendo machines.

That's a shame. I wonder if this is going to effect their third party support again.

Nintendo does better when seeking an audience Sony and MS doesent have.

Wii U was a failed attempt to appeal to a more core audience. Hence the more traditional gamepad and push for core games at launch

Obviously if the NX is going to be as powerful as a Wii U, then it's games will also be similar in size, i.e. Zelda BotW. Other platforms are irrelevant.

Not exactly.
More space is always welcomed... And can be eaten up by things like video and higher quality audio regardless of the systems base hardware. It's not all used just for pretty graphics.

No way I as reading that article, but but going of what people said, it dosent mentioned that this is the only device. This soounds only like a handheld with an hdmi, maybe by next holliday the big brother comes out that could have neo parity. The hybryd statment could just be that they use the same cartridges, so one game purchase would let you play it on both.

Wich is why they are pushing for something as strong as an x1 for a hand held, just strong enoufgh for it to handle water down console games.

This could work for third partys, I mean, there is no reason third partys would have to suport a game being playeable on both the weak hh and the strong console, they culd just make it playeable on the console, then nintendo games or whoever really wants to can push the game to be playeable on both. Cuz I think this was an issue with the wii u, they where ppusshing devs to use the tablet when there was no need. I mean they could even release a biger capacity cartridge for console only games that would take massive amounts of storage. witcher 3 is like 70gb on my hardrive.

But I hope its the powerfull docking station that ends up hapening. It could save money for thouse that want both. I mean a $250 HH, then to have console quality, the docking station can have something like a rx 470 or 480 for $150 or $200 more. Thats having both cnsoles for $450 and that sounds good to me.

But if this is the only thing coming out, this hybreed, then its a big disapointment. Please nintendo, if this rumor is true, at least release a full console as well.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

Makes me think about the chip design. If it were for Nintendo alone they would just take a 20nm X1 design and be done with it. But invidia is tech-oriented and wants its brand associated with high performance so maybe they push for 16nm X2 design.

Current management of Nintendo needs to evaluate all plans made in Iwata era. Because current management is the only one capable for identifying a flop and hit. I was expecting a powerful console with normal controllers.
