I think it's safe to say that if I haven't logged into Xbox Live for five years that I probably don't really care at that point.

An actual active user matters more I suppose. I'm sure many gamertags lost won't be taken as well. |
Of course active users matter more. That goes without saying.
I really wish Sony would do this. I could finally change my Username that way!

Because there are people holding on to good names that others would love to have who are still loyal customers.

Wow, that's a good reason actually!
So I stumbled upon this on GAF and it reminded me of this thread. Not being able to keep your username after five years of not logging in to any XBL device sounds harsh, but here is something on PSN's TOS:
17. Closing your Account
You may close your Account by contacting us using the details below. We may close your Account if it has not been used for at least 24 months. In both cases, we will not provide you with a refund of your unused wallet funds and unexpired periods of your subscriptions unless we are required to do so by law. After your Account is closed, you will not be able to access the PSN nor use the Products purchased with that Account.
Underlined the harshest part of this. So yeah, just to add some perspective here, LOL.
Also makes you wonder if/when Sony will EVER finally update the PSN database to allow people to change their names. Silly that it's not in there yet.

Funny how this is getting no buzz but at the same time nobody should be surprised...
