Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo Only Gets About 10% Of Money Spent on Pokemon GO

Hm, for some reason I thought they owned 51% of PokeCo.

33% of PokeCo, and they own unknown sum of creature who also have 33% of PokeCo, also financials from game stand point generally first go to nintendo than pokemon company.

If they own 50% of creature, than the 51% could be true.

Are you serious? lol. I'd say exposing and/or creating a place to SELL THE GAME is pretty "special". Without a store to sell your goods, you make no money.

Doesn't mean they should get over 20 percent. Anything above is overkill and just asking for too much

IIRC, 30% is standard cut for all major digital stores - Apple, Google and Steam.

Oh, I thought only apple had 30 percent cut.

Nevermind then.

12/22/2016- Made a bet with Ganoncrotch that the first 6 months of 2017 will be worse than 2016. A poll will be made to determine the winner. Loser has to take a picture of them imitating their profile picture.

30 percent cut for Google/Apple ... NX using a custom version of Android with their own storefront would make a lot of sense if it means that Nintendo would take home those fees themselves.

Nintendo owns a majority of stake in the Pokemon company, so any shares going to the Pokemon Company indirectly goes to them as well. Hence why the Pokemon Company will never release anything outside of Nintendo platforms (besides mobile). They are essentially owned by Nintendo

I'm shocked they only own one third. Don't see why they didn't buy the entire company.

Nintendo owns a portion of another company that owns part of PokeCo. when its all added up they very likely do own more than half of the Pokemon Company. If they didn't then they wouldn't have the ability to have a strangehold control over what the Pokemon Company does with their mascots

Generating millions of dollars of revenue each day, the game is nothing short of a cash cow. Unfortunately, according to Macquarie Capital Securities Analyst David Gibson, Nintendo likely only sees about 10% of the money spent directly.

“We presume that out of every 100 units earned at the App Store, 30 would go to Apple, 30 to [software developer] Niantic, 30 to Pokemon and 10 to Nintendo,” writes Gibson. “Hence, we don’t think Nintendo will earn much directly from the game. However, Nintendo will earn income from its equity-accounted income of owning 33 percent of Pokemon Company.”

Pokemon Company is actually a separate company not owned by Nintendo. Nintendo does own a large share of the company, however – about a third in total. So, they will see some of the Pokemon company’s profits.

Couple of things to note.

First, the bolded. Keep in mind that this is a prediction based upon precedent, and to be perfectly honest, given Nintendo's pedigree as a game developer, I wouldn't be surprised to have seen them work out some kind of deal that gets around the usual 30% that Apple takes from your average joe selling a product on their store.

Second, I have to question the notion of not earning much directly from the game. If Forbes is to be believed, Go has been making roughly $1.5 million a day since launch. That's a little over a million bucks for Nintendo in a week, if we just go by the 10% figure used in this article. $1 million a week is a pretty good haul for anyone, and that number probably won't fall off anytime soon considering the game has yet to launch in Europe and some other countries. I can't imagine this not earning Nintendo a good bit of income.

10% of the from the game... not much but they have earned 10 billion in stock money

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

As people said, its still money, especially since Nintendo probably invested next to zero on this game, and got money from it and had its shares skyrocket. So, its a big win nevertheless

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.
