Did you read the OP?

The eternal "checking for updates" on both windows 7/8 is a very common bug when it requires a lot of patching.

in fact if you google "checking f" by that stage google will suggest

an issue 1 worse than testicle cancer. Should at least attempt to read OP before reacting to the title at a guess?.

so stop whining and use a different OS if it troubles you that much.  simple solution.

You have been cradled so much that you think this is whining? Dear me. I guess an even simpler solution to an issue with his PC would be to stop using it altogether though? I mean, it's not helpful in the slightest but still, that shouldn't stop it from being a good comment on the internet!

Still though 2x the same reply in the thread, I'm fairly sure I had done this a while back, but yeah won't be replying anymore on this line of "conversation" with ya, waste of time.

I would guess to be fair that if you were a fan or even neutral towards Ms though, the thread title is very strongly worded and could well invoke a "fuck you so" reaction from some people, I understand it's as annoying as all heck when you just want to get a PC back up and running and it does that infinite checking for updates (I normally resolve it by just restarting over and over about 5-10 mins into the thing, eventually it manages to install 1 or 2 updates which seem to iron out issues, but yeah it's torture).

The title is definitely inflammatory. I was really angry though, trying multiple solutions and having 10 firefox tabs open on the same subject and nothing is working. I don't mind the "user error" comments.

If it was my laptop I wouldn't have tried as hard. My PC habits are responsible and I don't do anything that may have negative effects on my device or data and I backup my stuff daily when I go to sleep. But when it's other people's stuff, I have to make sure all security updates are installed along with Microsoft Security Essentials or whatever works these days.

Reporting it was one of the first things I done when coming into the thread!!

Not in a "kick this guys ass mods" way, just in a... "this will cause angst" way, so don't be annoyed at mods if they alter it slightly although that was a while ago and they must think it's fine. Could just see it was written in anger and anger leads to bad comments on here sometimes.

Yeah I know the feeling, work in IT support myself so I know the joys of having to wrap peoples PC's in virtual bubble wrap lol.

I'll be fine if they change it, I am not angry anymore

Edit: Less angrier title now.

I always to clean installs, no update since that slows everything down. So far, five Windows 10 installs, not once have I experienced issues with them so maybe I'm just very lucky :).

You originally claimed it was a user error, which it was not. I'm pretty sure that's a reasonable answer to your original post. Also, there could be a good reason he has to stick with Windows, so a single major annoyance might not be enough to warrant a switch. And even if there's no good reason, a lot of people have only used Windows and switching to a different OS might sound scary, so it's not that easy even if it's actually the best solution.

Oh yeah a windows 10 fresh install would be issue free now, the problem with a clean install of win7 is that the OS came out in 2009 which means there is close to 7 years of updates which it needs (if you're installing from old media, some newer installation disks for it would have some of the core updates pre installed) but yeah there are a few core updates like one which is an actual update ... to windows update, which of course is required to install the rest of the updates. I get paid a commission based on use of the word update!

As for windows 10, on most things it works perfectly, the places where it doesn't work... it doesn't work in the most dramatic way, be it a loss of user data or just a complete loss of functionality, more common on laptops I find than on desktop PCs for some reason, guessing issues with proprietary motherboards and cards.
