I don't think so, it was a period marked with bad hardware decisions, huge software droughts, and a significant decline in fandom. At the same time, PlayStation was sweeping in and steamrolling Nintendo in sales and software support. Nintendo lost all their most important second/exclusive third party support during this period: Square, Enix, DMA/Rockstar, Rareware. Parties that went from close exclusive supporters to no longer supporting Nintendo consoles. Nintendo was seen as passé through this period. They began to reverse this around the time of the GBA SP, but it wasn't until the DS Lite that things were clearly turning around to brighter days. So everything in between the end of the SNES and the DS Lite was a really dark time for Nintendo fans from the NES and SNES era.

So what would be your opinion about the Wii era ? (2011-2016, WiiU included)

The Wii U had a completely opposite philosophy to the Wii: Wii was sleek and intuitive, the Wii U was chunky and convoluted. Also, Wii was filled with killer apps, and Wii U doesn't have any.

2006 saw the launch of the DS Lite and Wii, New Super Mario Bros, Twilight Princess, the virtual console, and Wii Sports. While they don't seem very interesting now, at the time they were all very refreshing and exciting things, all in a very short period of time. Then following in 2007 were a bunch of games appreciated by Nintendo fans like Metroid Prime 3, Fire Emblem, Paper Mario, and most importantly, another killer app with Super Mario Galaxy. Then Fit, Smash brothers, and Mario Kart 7 right around the corner. There were exciting little titles coming out that no one would have expected to be as much fun as they turned out to be. And towards the later years, Mario Galaxy 2, Just Dance, Monster Hunter, and Xenoblade.

Then in 2011 the new and fun ideas stopped coming. Even before Zelda Skyward Sword. 3DS came in at a disappointingly high price for most people, and Wii U launch was very far from exciting. Nintendo hadn't had a new killer app in a while by the time Wii U came out, and they haven't really had one since. Later 2011 to present has been like a second dark age for Nintendo.

I hope it ends with NX, because I really like Nintendo and think they have the capability to do a lot better than they are, currently. I also think Nintendo has more than proven themselves capable of digging themselves out of deep holes.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I guess I should vote myself.

Xbox 2007 is a really nice year. BioShock is probably the best game of 2007, edging out Super Mario Galaxy by the slimmest of margins. The Orange Box included Half-Life 2, one of the ten best games ever made in my opinion. Halo 3 is an awesome game which, to this day, sports the best online multiplayer I think I've ever played. Mass Effect and Modern Warfare are both excellent too. And Crackdown was a lot of fun.

Sony 1998 is great, too. Unfortunately I haven't played all of those games. Metal Gear Solid is a masterwork, and Gran Turismo and Resident Evil 2 are outstanding titles.

Not having played all the Sony games, I think I need to give it to Nintendo 1998. Banjo is arguably Rare's best game. Turok 2 is a spectacular open-world shooter. 1080 is one of the better snowboarding games ever made. Body Harvest is basically GTA3 before GTA3. F-Zero X is a silky smooth futuristic racer with huge replay value. Rogue Squadron, to me, is the best of the series. Tetris DX is a massive improvement over the original Tetris, which was already a masterpiece. Another 1998 N64 game, not listed, is MLB featuring Ken Griffey Jr., which I consider the best baseball game of the generation.

And then, of course, there's Ocarina: the best N64 game, the best game of 1998, the best game of all time. 18 years later, it's yet to be topped. All-time great music and sound design; expertly-designed dungeons and boss encounters; a fully-realized and alive 3D world; plenty of secrets and items to discover; meaningful side-quests; movement and combat made easy through z-targeting and context sensitive buttons; a wistful, epic tale of adventure, loss, and redemption; and, across it all, a time-traveling mechanic that adds weight and consequence to every decision, and every action.

So Nintendo 1998 for me :)

Zelda will always mean automatic win for the that year and Nintendo

None wins for me
I dont know about specific years, but an SNES and PS2 year would win for me, not N64 or PS1. And I've never owned, nor finished an Xbox game... sooo...

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

You need a new name.

Acevil, the taste-maker

From the years listed Playstation wins. MGS, RE2, FF:Tactics, Xenogears, Tenchu, Tekken 3 that's incredibly awesome and hard to beat.

Although, I feel like the best Nintendo year was poorly chosen. Yes I know OoT is like the second coming of Christ for some but the rest of the lineup that year is pretty meh. I'd have to do some digging but 2007, 2008 or the SNES years could easily top 1998.

Yesterday I created three threads that asked members to vote on their favorite individual years for the Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox ecosystems.

Best Year Ever: Nintendo
Best Year Ever: PlayStation
Best Year Ever: Xbox

JamaicameCRAZY had a great idea to put the three winning years in a head-to-head-to-head match-up. So that's what I've done.

The three contending years are...

Nintendo 1998
PlayStation 1998
Xbox 2007

Some marquee games from all three years are listed below. Note that console and portable titles both count. Also note: these are N. American release dates.

Nintendo|1998 PlayStation|1998 Xbox|2007
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Metal Gear Solid Halo 3
Banjo-Kazooie Final Fantasy Tactics Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Pokemon Red & Blue Gran Turismo The Orange Box
F-Zero X Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped Mass Effect
1080° Snowboarding Tekken 3 BioShock
Tetris DX Xenogears Blue Dragon
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Resident Evil 2 Crackdown
Turok 2: Seeds of Evil Tenchu: Stealth Assassins Forza Motorsport 2
Body Harvest MediEvil Eternal Sonata
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX Spyro the Dragon Project Gotham Racing 4

You didnt have to mention me was just a random suggestion. You did all the work and came up with the subject itself. Nice work.

Ot. Wasnt a big game in the early 90s. Mostly watched my dad or brother play games. So by default and for other reasons going to have to go with xbox 2007.

EVERY GAMERS WORST NIGHTMARE...THE TANGLING CABLES MONSTER!

       Coffee is for closers!

I would argue that 1994 was easily a much stronger year for Nintendo. Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Earthbound, Killer Instinct, FFVI, Megaman X and X2, Super Punch Out, FE: Mystery of the Emblem (if we count Japan only releases), and more.

From the list provided, though, I'd choose XB360 2007, with Bioshock being the deciding factor.

I prefer PS2 2001 and 2005 over all of those tbqh
