Forums - Gaming Discussion - VR is going to be what Nintendo only wished the Wii could have been! Casuals will go crazy-

VR could only become mainstream when it hits decent prices. Not a lot of people are gonna buy a 500$+ headset that doesn't have a lot of "killer" uses, no matter how cool and futuristic it is.

Around the Network

VR will become mainstream at some point and be all over shows like Ellen and all the daytime talk shows old people watch, but I'm not sure that'll be Day One, might take a while for the interest to move away from gamers and to the mainstream.

The Price is too high and the technology too new and too focused on gaming to currently catch a massive audience, but VR will become huge eventually.

Are you stating the Wii was a failure?

Nah, VR isn't as accessible or as cheap as Wii. Cheat and accessible are Casual's favorite words.

VR will be insane!

Around the Network

I have been saying this since VR was announced. VR is the culmination of HD+3D+Motion. This is the ultimate goal of what the industry has been building up to over the past 15 years, from the original Eye Toy, to Wii-Mote, and the 3DS.

Even bigger, this tech applies to basically everything. Gaming is only a small, but very entertaining slice of the pie. All of the current VR hardware makers are supporting open platforms for any and all kinds of applications. At the end of the day, having VR in the home will become more important than having a TV or a computer. In the next 5 years, a huge majority of business will be done exclusivly via VR.

For those saying this is to expensive, I say you are not seeing the whole picture yet. People spend $1000's a year on TV's, Computers, Tablets, and Phones. VR is going to replace, and become more important than any devices that came before it. So, an $800 to $1600 entry price for VR is a drop in the bucket compared to the value in return.

To continue, I think we will only see VR prices rise, as it becomes more of a nessecity. People have no problem paying that ~$1000 for the first headset, but in no time the demand for better devices will explode, and people are going to be willing to pay a couple grand for the best experince they can get.

I would not be shocked to see new PSVR, OR, and Vive models every year, just like we see with TV's, Computers, Phones, and Tablets.

This is the future of business, the future of home computing, the future of entertainment, and the future of social networking.

Yeah, no. Casuals will not be lapping up the VR products. Casuals like cheapness and convenience (Wii was cheap and intuitive to nongamers, mobile games are readily available for free and very simple). The VR sets are $400 or more and take a multiestep process just to setup and play. Let alone getting used to using them. Also, most VR games are bringing in more complexity, not less.
