Forums - General Discussion - Chinese washing detergent turns a black man into an Asian man.

Would it still be racist if he were white?

Still racist. 104 40.00%

Not racist. 86 33.08%

Not racist enough. 70 26.92%

I lived in china as well and they do have a race problem.

The ad is racist because of the context of the chinese attitudes to black people (Which they don't hide much). Anyone with dark skin in china is deemed bad, very unattractive, criminal, and poor.

It's normal for chinese people too say, 'I'm not racist I just don't like black people'. I've had conversations where people have seen photos where I'm eating with a black person and said, 'ewww, a black guy.' with extreme disgust and not realising there anything remotely wrong with acting that way.

Many people there don't have a very well developed sense of what racism is in most of the country. It's normalised and they don't question it. There's bigotry in china between chinese people of slightly different skin tones. Actual black people make them crazy.

The ad it ripped off was comparing a white slob to a black body builder in a culture where white people are the norm and made for a largely white audience. This compared a scruffy black guy in a culture that often overtly dislikes black people to a pale skinned chinese guy.

As a black man, this made me laugh. It's more of a misguided advert than a racist ad.

That's pretty fucked up...

Couldn't have said it better. I couldn't believe what I was watching.

Both ads are politically uncorrect, but not racist. The Italian one has a clear sexual double-entendre based on a positive stereotype about black people physique and dick size. Both ads are vaguely inspired to old Italian cartoon Calimero, that was actually created to advertise a detergent (and that years later was accused of being racist by dumb, humourless and ignorant, but presumptuous people that didn't understand it was created in a different context, with a naïve and well-meaning mindset and in a period when the concept of political correctness didn't even exist yet in Italy), then it became a full-fledged cartoon series and was also licensed in Japan.

It is not racist imo. But it is definitely cruel.
If it was a white man nobody would have said anything. Just because he is black doesn't mean this has to be racist.

This is not racist, this is just a ripoff.

This ! It's  good parody to see thé différence in thé réactions.

What annoys me is people didnt say anything about this italian one but you see eveyone making a news  about the asian one, what a huge hypocrisy from thé media to always ignore thé racism when it's on this side.

This is outragous! It didn't work, he turned yellow instead of white... Bad product! But i am sure the Kkk sure ordered a few packages or so, walking around with a soaked broom and tries to wash Black people faces to see if it would work, they are dumb enough to believe in all that:One race Superior to another BS

To be racist you have to actually be a racist and mean what you say. A lot of people forget that when flinging around the -ism words. Racism is the thought that certain races are by nature inferior to yours. If you don't think that then you're not a racist and as such you cannot be racist.

If you prefer around to be white people you're not automatically a racist. Preferring one thing does not mean hating the other. That's why this commercial is not racist unless that was the intent of the producers.

So technically we don't know if it was racist or not.

Were all adults here but lets not act like morons. Despite the obvious humor here this ad can clearly be very harmful especially to children. If I was living in China (Im black) and had a kid Id hate to have to watch this ad in their presence and/or justify its existence. Don't dismiss everything with "hur hur humour hur hur take a joke hur hur hur"

If it was just a white man covered in mud, and he got "clean" after being washed, it wouldnt be anything special.

Water cleans mud off.

The intire "joke" is their detergent is so effective it did the impossible.

I dont think this is racist btw.

It "could" be interpreated as her not wanting the black guy, because hes covered in paint & dirt/sweaty.

The asian guy that comes up is not just asian, but hes no longer dirty/sweaty or covered in paint.

It doesnt mean Asian > black.

I dont think this is enough to be offened by, and labled as racist.
