While the rumored PlayStation 4.5 is supposed to be Sony's new console, Game Informer's Lorne Lanning asked PlayStation president Shuhei Yoshida about a PlayStation 5.
Since Sony has released PlayStations 1, 2, 3 and 4, a PS5 would be the next logical step, but according to Yoshida, there may not be a PS5.
According to Lanning, he asked Yoshida, "What does the PlayStation 5 look like?" To which Yoshida responded, "You mean if..."
Lanning said he was shocked by the revelation and asked Yoshida, "Are you willing to say that on stage?" And Yoshida said, "Yeah, it's an if."
According to Lanning, it appears that Sony is trying to adapt to the changing landscape of video games and technology.
"It was a really interesting thing; he didn't give me a clear answer, but he's hinting at, 'We need to be more agile, none of us know what the future really looks like so how do we adapt to it faster?'" Lanning said. "To me, that's the way he was sort of thinking about it, which I think is the right way think about it."
Lanning also believes that gaming consoles may become like cell phones of today and last for a shorter amount of time.
"The idea that you're going to release a piece of technology that's going to last for seven years into the future is becoming I think less and less viable even though the generations of platforms are lasting longer," Lanning said. "So it seems like it's in conflict."
