Actually saving 3DS directly affected Wii U launch and first year, Nintendo invest huge effort in order save 3DS in time they needed to prepare Wii U launch.

Fact is that after most successful generation in gaming Nintendo was too relax with 3DS and Wii U and they thought they will sale alone similar like DS/Wii without any effort, but after much worse 3DS sales than DS and terrible Wii U sales you can bet they will invest huge effort in next platform in order to have much more attractive product that will sell much better than Wii U.

If NX allows users to put a single cartridge into both home and handheld console (or download the same game for both devices) it won't need to. Something like 25m home consoles + 65m handhelds will ensure healthy profits for Nintendo. And I guess that's what they are aiming for right now.

Sony doesn't do five year cycles. Sony does 10 year cycles, but replaces consoles after seven years on the market. They are one year away from being halfway through the gen.

Marketshare isnt hurting them because Nintendo makes their consoles in the opposite manner as Microsoft and Sony. Strictly affordable.

I don't understand what problem you have with my wording. I'm clearly only referring to Sony and Microsoft as competition, whose gen started in 2013. Even if you were to assume a 5 year life cycle (and I assumed 6), it's still practically halfway through the generation right now. So I don't know what you're trying to prove.

As of now it's not in Nintendo's interest to defeat XB1/PS4 but instead to:
1-fix all the BS they did with the Wii U (and partially with the Wii too);
2-sell moderately well (30-40M units sold would be ok IF it's a home console)

Vita/PS3 is in no way, shape or form comparable to the proposed idea of a fully unified platform. The idea of NX is a single platform available in multiple form factors similar to iOS or Android. Same architecture, operating system, online infrastructure, account system, API, runs the same engines/middleware that share a unified software library.

No. If it was released at the same time and is similarly powered, maybe. It's too little too late. I just hope it isn't what people start referring to as 9th Gen. It's still WAY too early in this Gen to say the next has started. If it's categorized right, Nintendo will have two consoles this generation.
