Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Witness is getting pirated hard — creator Jonathan Blow warns it’ll impact future projects

That sucks, I know I wouldn't be happy if something I made got pirated and whatnot.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

If he realizes that pirates wouldn't pay for the game regardless of price, why would he even say such things about DRM? Paraphrased: "I might have to add DRM in order to keep making video games." - You already said that pirates wouldn't pay for your game...

The whole argument that they wouldnt pay anyway doesn't have much proof behind it. Take a look at the music industry in the 1980's and 1990's and compare it to now. A great record like Appetite for Destruction sold like 25 million copies. Now if an album sells 5 million it's legendary. Generations grow up with stealing being the norm and think nothing of it.

Do you know how many people in these forums use emulators on older games which are sold on the virtual console or Ebay and justify it by saying it's not actually theft? lol Online file sharing has ruined or is ruining almost every media industry we have. It's a real problem.

Well, he should have released it just on consoles. *shrugs

this game was on sale for like $10 last week on PSN. I watched the trailer and decided not to buy it based on that, didn't know it was so popular.

This is the reason everything is delayed on pc, make the money on console first, when sales have dried up release it to the 5% of pc gamers that will pay for it rather than pirate.

Bullshit. It wasn't even out last week and it costs almost $40 on PSN, nowhere near $10: http://the-witness.net/news/

It's the overhype Blow...or maybe over-expectations.

Saying this as someone who has Myst in 'Top 10 franchises with at least 3 entries', this is quite niche genre...if it was not for Myst, the genre would never touch, even for that brief moment, mainstream audience, and even that only happened on PC.

Honestly, once he went on Sony's stage and introduced the game to their audience, he pretty much changed dynamic of what that game is vs how it will be perceived. In my opinion, he should've kept it away from PC for a while.

That's actually a good point, Myst and 7th Guest/11th Hour games weren't hugely popular.  I loved them though, so did my brother (told him about Witness the other day, he got it).

Myst wasn't popular??? The bestselling PC game in the 90s and the killer app for CD-ROM drives? Okay...

And this is why games should be released on consoles first before PC. it's messed up when most games on PC are pirated more than they are actually bought. Especially single player games.

How would it positively impact sales to delay a PC port of a game? Given the revenue that PC generates, it doesn't seem like that's a great idea, even if a game is getting pirated.

Current gaming platforms - Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, New 3DS, PC

I'll wait for a physical release. Digital versions are worth squat, certainly not $40. ($44 on Steam)
