Forums - Politics Discussion - There is no Such Thing as "White Privilege"

I'm guessing being a black person (no I'm not black) for a couple of weeks would be a rude awakening for a lot of people.

Yes anyone can be successful in America if they try hard enough most of the time. That said ignoring that there is racism against blacks or other minorities doesn't magically make it true either.

I have a black friend and I've seen it first hand, dude wouldn't hurt a fly, but he gets stopped by police more often than I have. When we are social situations he feels he has to go out of his way to show people he in non-threatening. Etc. etc.

In Sweden we have some of the highest education in the world, some of the healthiest people, far less income inequality and a population that is way more involved in voting in the general elections. So yes, making the rich pay more to make education and healthcare available for all is the recipe for a successful society where everyone get the same opportunity to succeed.

What is you explanation that a disproportionate small amount of black people and women are financially successful compared to white men?

And  Sweden is accumulating a lot of debts and looking ever so more to a abyss because of it, but sure keep growing the debts and raising the taxes and you are set for success, for sure.

Lol, these political the threads keep getting worse and worse. The gaming crowd is not the most politically inclined, but I find it hard to believe that people can't take the time to just do the research. White males are paid more per hour than their female and minority counterparts for the same work (with equivalent qualifications). It's not politics, it's statistics.

Why people have to bring personal opinion and anecdote into the equation, rather than just fix the issue, I can only speculate. Fear based insecurity that our (I'm a white male) dominance of society is in decline?

Statistics that are usually very wrong and biased... why would any employer decide to hire the more expensive employee if the other would generate the same work and improve their profit?

You need to spend a day or two living as a minority. You'd change your mind

I predict that the Wii U will sell a total of 18 million units in its lifetime.

The NX will be a 900p machine

Yes, Mexican and Asian also suffer a lot of discrimation, but we try to lump all the problems faced by african american as racial problems.

Nope. It is the law. Companies are required to meet certain levels of diversity in order to be safe from being out of compliance with EEOC (i.e. it opens themselves up to discrimination claims and suits). While the Civil Rights Act of 1991 dampered the threat of suits, it still happens today and the culture in which companies choose people.

There are no racial percentage quotas for private companies (with no government contracts).  Also, the Civil Rights Act of 1991 only added strengthened the means of redress during discrimination litigation.  It didn't establish any quotas.

I know, I said it only dampered the threat of suits from employees. It also didn't affect the existing laws about quotas.

and honestly, I don't think there is a large company that doesn't have at least one government contract. (Even my relatively small company (~150 employees) has several)

There may be no quotas... I don't know their regulation on the matter, but I saw companies that had pressure to have 50/50 on woman and black people because of public perception.

I'm black, 6 ft tall, muscular, articulate, a former cop, etc. I can read a room and sometimes, it happens. I've stood in line at an auto store with my item in hand and been totally ignored for the "non black" person behind me. I've had people afraid of me as soon as I walk into a room. I saw harassment first hand when I was still a cop. Even dated a white female a while back who got pulled over every time she drove through a particular intersection because the officer knew we were dating.

It's real but you can't let things like that stop you from living and you can't let that be your excuse. Some people may go their while life and never see something similar to racism. Some see it all the time. Some look for it in places where it doesn't exist (ie: the black female who was in my fiance's office and thought she was racist). I choose not to dwell.
