Forums - Gaming Discussion - How is it possible that the X1 and PS4 are already basically the same price as a Wii U?

Eh....Eherm.....I...I care! :P

No seriously, I appreciate it. I'm a student, I'm not swimmimng in money. So everything I don't have to spend on my power bill, I can spend on games/assorted nice things. Maybe electricity is cheaper in the US or something, but it's pretty expensive where I live and prices are rising pretty much yearly.

Electricity is expensive over here. A "normal" amount to pay every bill is around the $400-500 Mark. I believe the providers are just greedy, because the watt price isn't too expensive.

I don't mean to discount your experience, but most people are looking at the games to decide what console they want.  I bet the vast majority of people have no idea how much electricity each console uses.

Because the WiiU is overpriced HW wise and the PS4 and X1, while very capable, are not super advanced themselves. That said the PS4 and X1 are priced correctly and the WiiU is not.

To sumarize, PS4 is adequetly priced for what it is and is can be profitable at a decent price. The X1, while less powerful than the PS4, is desperately trying to keep some kind of competitive edge and cuts price ft or that reason alone. And the WiiU, while only being slightly above last gen, is just trying to make up for lack of overall sales.

Keep in mind that while a price cut will help move units, it will never sell in droves at this point. I think Ninty is just trying to get as much short term profit as possible before NX to be honest.

That's because it's more important for sony and ms to please fans instead of squeezing them for more money. In the long run, that will bring more gamers to playstation and xbox consoles while nintendo's fanbase shrinks if they all keep down this road. There's nothing wrong with a company wanting more revenue but business decisions now will affect revenue in the future.

Is that yearly, or monthly? If monthly, holy shit, I'll never complain about my electricity bill ever again. If yearly, you pay about half to two thirds of what I'm paying. It's been on a steady rise for years now. (I also probably consume more energy than the average household because, especially in winter I need to have the lights on pretty bright for hours in order to be able to work properly. I use mostly low energy consuption LED bulbs, but still, it adds up.)

And I didn't buy the WiiU based on my electricity bill either. :P

But, like I said, I appreciate the effort. And since I really do have to watch these things a little, yeah, I did know prior to buying it, that it has low energy consumption. I realize I'm the exception though. ;)

Whe wii u gamepad is $20 to produce? If so Nintendo is good at making money lol. If you mean the pro controllers then i guess that was already inferred.

Oh ok

This is the main reason why I really hope Nintendo invests into the NX platform being manufactured on Finfet, because initially it will cost them more. But as time goes on the prices will drop dramatically as that process becomes more mature with more companies putting their products on Finfet as well. The WiiU is such a custom piece of a console that it's almost impossible to drastically reduce the cost without taking a major loss. When no one else is using legacy hardware, Nintendo is the one that has to pay extra for companies to even manufacture these semiconductors.

It's funny how people say PS4 and Xbone are cheaper but don't you pay a monthly service to use online? So how much a month do you pay Sony or Microsoft a month? That needs to be factor in as well because Nintendo s Internet is free
