Forums - Nintendo Discussion - What made the great Nintendo games great?

@curl-6

I think there are two ways to come up with new controller interfaces. the N64 controller was made for mario64 Wiimote was made for Wii sports but the Wii U game pad was made for what Nintendo land? which makes me believe there wasn't a game idea that inspired the Wii U gamepad, but rather Nintendo made it in order to be different.

What made them great? Originality and creativity.

Originality and creativity steams from having a great imagination.

And that's exactly what Miyamoto and a few other key developers had back in the early to late 80's. DK, Metroid, Kid Icarus, SMB, Zelda... it boggles the mind to think about. They were, for a time, doing to video games what the Beatles did for music.

Yeah great analogy and as we all know musician's are rarely able to produce high standards their whole career

I would say fun factor, accessibility, creativity, originality and polishes that gives great and smooth experience with any problems.

"Easy to Learn. Hard to Master"

I agree with you on that one. Especially how Nintendo puts "local multiplayer" into their games. Friends can just join in and play with everyone else.

Yeah pretty much; the Wii U Gamepad was a solution in search of a problem.

Don't take this the wrong way but you're quite a rare breed indeed haha

Many tend to think that the Wii days were dark times with the whole focus on waggle and whatnot. And while I did stray from them and look else where, I have to admit they made some pretty great games for the system.

No offense taken, I am fully aware my opinions are often out of step with the "core" crowd. :)

i fully agree on your opinion. i think when nintendo says they want to always innovate some core gamers take it for granted. all innovations are good because when there are less better ones you know what to not to do. and thats how i see nintendo doing things. they discuss and try to innovate something that is interesting and will appeal alot of consumers. but if it doesnt go that way they know what to not do, or change. So i greatly appreciate the focus nintendo has for innovation. Because thet wont try to make the same thing over again. and a good exampke is super mario maker. that will make the nintendo devs to think even harder for what they will do in the next 2D game.

I personally didn't play too many Wii games, but they were great because they were unique and innovative

They don't try to be cool. They try to be good.

And usually they succeed.

This. Also, they try to be fun, not popular. If you just make the games fun, they will be popular anyway.

Imagine the Impossible

I guess the best answer I can give is with the Wii, they made games more accessible and easier to understand for the general audience to enjoy, and that is what was the Wii's biggest strength.

The Wii U however was kinda the opposite, being kinda daunting to them. The games were well designed though, and fun.

For the N64, I believe they thought of what Mario 64 would be and then designed a controller to suit the needs of that game (and 3D games in general).

For the Wii, I believe they thought of the concept of Wii Sports and then designed a controller that allowed for that vision to come true.

For the Wii U, it seems like they designed the gamepad first and then created Nintendo Land to justify its existence. They reversed the order of things and that obviously didn't work.
