You give FFXII too much credit ...

I wouldn't even say the story is the main issue. It was very far away from been a FF game, more so than XIII!

You say XIII has a forgettable story yet XII is practically a crappy history class in it's own fictional world. You could make an argument for ANY FF game that has unlikeable characters. XII was arguable more automatic than XIII when it came to combat. Sure XIII over did it with the linear map design but since when did FF games have good side content ?

If anything the RPG elements are stressed even more than past FF games. RPGs are not about customization or the leveling system ...

Mediocre game ? Damn, I guess all other FF games aside from VII, VIII, and X suck ...

Bandwagon much ?

What's wrong with IX then? I wasn't a big fan of it back in the day, but the more I think about it the more I realise it actually had all the elements of a good Final Fantasy title. The only reason I didn't like it when I first played it was because I much preferred sci-fi settings.

And I actually found the side content in the SNES, PS1 games to really improve my enjoyment of the games (side dungeons, card games, mini games). It gave the worlds extra depth and variety which is missing from both XII and XIII. Even FFX had a plethora of side content (probably too much now I'm replaying the HD remaster).

As for XII and XIII, they're both bad!

OT: So yes, the Final Fantasy series is definitely the most divisive.

A slow battle system, abilities tied to weapons, and an awful trance system ...

These are HARD complaints, not soft ones like the characters or the story ...

It had all of the good elements of a FF game yet it hardly has any fans to show for it when it's not as well remembered as the high points ...

As much as I agree with the points bolded, FF9 is absolutely lovely.
That's coming from someone with zero nostalgia about the game.
Also, FF7 has abilities tied to materias that anyone can use, FF8 has abilities tied to monsters that anyone can draw...

12 as great as well.

Yes you had materia's but they were very flexible and painless when it came to configuration ...

As for FFVIII's draw system, drawing the spells were annoying but it's not like your encouraged to use a lot of it when junctioning them to your stat had more benefits ...

Keeping support abilities in FFIX was a painstaking process since you had to learn the abilities with the weapon and grinding for tons of AP was no easy thing ...

GameCube. Younger Nintendo fans think it was the best console, real Nintendo fans know it sucked.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Smash comes to mind.

GTA Vice City Stories and IV, God Of War: Ascension and Uncharted 3 were quite divisive.

What issues does IX have? XII has issues, mainly in its story but it's at least a great RPG with a ton of stuff to do.

XIII has a forgettable story (seriously I couldn't tell you the plot of that game nowadays if my life depended on it), no likable characters, a battle system that tried to make you play it as little as possible, a ridiculously linear world, boring side content, the RPG elements are dumbed down as much as possible and the whole money and weapon upgrade system is extremely tedious. Believe me, I tried to like that game, I bought my PS3 for it and even got the Platinum trophy, but at the end of the day there's nothing there that makes it more than a mediocre game in general and a poor Final Fantasy game in specific.

So your whole argument for FFXIII not being bad is "look at XII"?

I didn't say XIIs story and characters are good, they aren't, but the game was open and had tons of different stuff to do. And the combat certainly was a lot more tactical than XIIIs, plus it didn't have that stupid thing where when the leader dies it's game over. Tons of prior FF games had good side content, VI-IX most definitely had it. In XIII you don't even have optional Summons to find. For like 20 hours or more of the game it gives you no other option but to strictly follow its path.

Bolded: Are you trying to redefine RPG elements are now?

And if you're trying to suggest that VII, VIII and X are worse than XIII then just lol.

Well, I think we reached the common agreement that Final Fantasy is the most divisive franchise. Apart from the original FFX-2, that game is simply broken.

Said that your "fixing" is factually wrong. FFXIII is the fourth most sold FF game, close to FF VIII. And it keeps selling, also on PC. So it has the critics and user reviews, althoug not stellars (but still great) and the popularity.

Then I am not sure what you meant with "FF X also fits on the list". Are you trying to say that FFX, the best FF ever made is inferior to, I dunno, that childish FF IX? Blasphemous people in the good ol' times were put at the stake for much less!! :p

Lol "childish" IX... I feel no compulsion to explain why that assessment is silly, as I suspect you're trolling me :p

I listed X because it IS divisive, perhaps moreso than any FF game in fact. The main issue is that it was indeed a good game (I enjoyed it), but it marked the most overt transition into the linear, modern RPG we see today. I finished the game in about 14 hours without a strategy guide... That's just ridiculous by RPG standards.

Given your fondness for XIII and that X is your favorite, though, it's quite clear why we disagree here. You really like the new style of RPGs, whereas I long for what Final Fantasy used to be. Neither is more correct than the other, it's just a matter of preference.

Also, we've definitely just proven that Final Fantasy is the most divisive franchise haha

Not really. My fondness if for FF X. I just consider FF XIII a good game, but it deserves that 1/10 of a point less (2/10 when compared to FF X :D). If you read my second reply you see how my judgement on FF IX is still on hold. I played the Italian version and the localization was simply awful. And yes, childish. Now I bought the American one, so I'll see. I played just the beginning and it had a different feeling. About other games FF VIII was my favorite after FFX. Then I replayed it recently and that drawing killed me. But the story is still uber alles!

Regarding FF X... Sure it isn't divisive in Japan. It has been voted by the Famitsu readers in 2006 as the best game ever. Regarding the 16 hours.. I must have rushed through it. I don't believe I can manage to do it even on purpose. Still, doesn't FF IX have a special weapon one gets after beating most of the game in less than 12 hours? :p

FF XIII. A small loud minority pretends to speak for everybody else who actually enjoyed the game.

I'm confused. Do you mean by loud minority, the ones that didnt enjoy the game? Because sales of the sequals paint a very clear picture on that. They are clearly the majority. There are obviously those that enjoyed it though, but i would say those were the minority looking at sales numbers.
