Forums - Politics Discussion - Should governments start regulating religion?

spurgeonryan said:

Not only do many religious oranization teach many facts that have proven to be false or theories that greatly hold back society, but there are many other problems organized religion brings up too.

1. Taxes - how much do governments lose to religion?

2. Cults should not be allowed to get as bad as some do.

3. Religious extremist - causing wars, terrorism, hate crimes, etc

4. Intolerance - how many more humans needs to suffer due to religious "morals"?

In this day and age I just do not think there is room for religion anymore. As a hobby it is fine, but there are so many things wrong with religion that it should not be allowed the power it has over society anymore.

Agree?

I can't speak for religion in general, only for Christianity (seeing as I'm Christian).

1. I'd like to see the % of total charitable donations are made by people that go to church. Christianity encourages loving your neighbor, feeding the poor, helping out the widows. Obviously not everyone who calls themself a Christian is going to actually be one (it's one thing to say it simply because you go to church, it's another to actually have Jesus Christ in your heart encouraging you to be more Christlike), but those that do feel called and LOVE to give.

2. While many things I'd consider to be a cult are counterproductive to society (Westboro church, for example), we can't simply violate their rights simply because it upsets or inconveniences us. Now, if you want to get rid of freedom of speech, that will be your mission and will be a difficult task, at least in the U.S.

3. Anyone who physically harms someone is violating the law, so yes there should be a crackdown on organizations/mosques/"churches" that are harming people.

4. Christians cannot tolerate sin, because we are saved by Christ and being molded in HIS image by the Father. We shouldn't, and hopefully don't (lots of Christians out there), hate the sinner, but we can't always be perfect in that regard. Just because the world thinks something is now ok or good doesn't mean it actually is. In the 1700's people thought it was ok to bring your children to guilitines to watch people get their heads cut off while you bought food/items like it's a festival, that doesn't mean it was a GOOD thing, but it was certainly acceptable in the world's eyes. We are consistently getting more wicked as a race and tolerating more evils, but many, if not most, if not the vast majority of our race seem to think it's ok or good.

Again, not sure about the rest of the religions, but you can't just eliminate Christianity. Look at China, the more Christianity is persecuted, the more people turn to Christ and it grows. The Roman Empire tried to squash it, and instead turned TO it as the truth. There are underground churches in countries all over the world that don't tolerate Christianity, and they are growing because people see the wickness that is being done to Christians and being done by people that claim to be good leaders (either politically or spiritually in some other religion). If people try to squash it, it will only grow because people will, as many do in other countries, see the true colors of the world and realize their need for Christ. That isn't me just hopelessly predicting that, it is based on thousands of years of facts about the Christian Church and the growth it has gone through in spite of persecution.

I think we as as a society should be done with religion, I'm not atheist and I think anyone should believe what they want but in my opinion there should be majour pressure on organised religions to stay out of any political scenario/ local election/law enforcment etc. We need to leave it behind us and move forward. Strong belief systems of any kind should be kept away from societal matters and politics imo, just look what Hitler done with just one deeply embedded belief.

And look what the Soviet Union did to it's people with the idea of no religion. Both sides are evil. Allowing people to have their beliefs and allowing them to be able to express them (individually, politically, etc) or NOT to is what the U.S. was founded upon. I don't want to be like Hitler Germany OR Soviet Union, I want to be us (as bad as that is at times, it is better than than other two).

Cults - if there's any negative effects of cults (e.g. slavery), they're already illegal.

I'd be curious how many here were actually raised in religious cults.  The legal thing they do is a form of mental torture where those that question dogma are "disassociated" from the whole.  This means those friends and family you grew up with and came to love suddenly have nothing to do with you. They actually believe this is compassion because you are wayward and to show any sympathy would be endorsing your decadent life style.  Now, imagine growing up and being an inquisitive child who knows that asking questions like, "Why can't women be elders?" can get you and your parents in trouble and cost you everything.  I saw it several times and it is heart breaking how cruel people can be, specifically to children, because of indoctrination. I have a very low tolerance for those that hide behind tolerance as a way to bully others.

Let assume in one extreme spectrum of the argument that there is no God or shall we say "higher being." With that logic, religion is what you create it to be because we all live by something or some set of self-proclaim rules. How in the hell are you going to regulate that? With that being said, Jesus Christ in my Lord and Savior. Believe it or not, Jesus is anti-religion. Always had been, always will be. Chew in that for a while.

Nonsense.  Nazi Germany was a Christian state with about 50 percent of its citizens being protestant, and 30 percent being catholic.  Regardless of the regimes personal beliefs (which we have no reason to believe were atheistic) they publicly used religion as a tool to motivate.  Books regarding evolution ("Writings of a philosophical and social nature whose content deals with the false scientific enlightenment of primitive Darwinism and Monism (Häckel) were on banned books.  The state endorsed religious instruction.

I would not go so far as to say Naziism was a Christian movement, but it certainly was not atheistic, so do not imply that it is.

As for Soviet Russia, yes they were atheistic, although their position on religion changed at many points throughout it history.  Opposition to religion was largely based largely on the fact that the previous abusive regime was deeply interwoven with the Russian Orthodox Church.

However, it is still nonsense to claim that Soviets did this to their people "with the idea of no religion".  The idea of no religion was ancillary to the communist movement.  The movement was about a system of economics and government, and not about religion.  You cannot say that what happened in Soviet Russia was due to atheism any more than I could say that World War 1 was caused by religion because most of the parties were religious.

No because they cant.

Specific laws for freedom of religion should be abolished. Freedom of speech/opinion is sufficient. Because that's what religion is, an opinion. Existence of a God can not be proven, it's an opinion. Wich way to serve that god(specific religion) is an opinion. And following certain religious guidelines is a lifechoice, just like someone who chooses to be vegetarian.

Religion should lose it's special status in society.

Sounds like a terrifying precedent and a potential endorsement of genocide.
