I expect a direct by the end of next month.
I really hope not! I really liked the Directs, specially the ones which focused on one game!

It makes me curious: perhaps Nintendo doesn't see much upside to doing regular directs any more. They're costly and timely to produce with perhaps no clear correlation to increased sales for any particular title.

What makes you think that they are costly to make?
Like others have said, I wouldn't expect a new one until the next CEO is announced. Another thing to keep in mind is that it is likely that they still had a few months worth of pre-recorded Directs with Iwata starring them, obviously they can't show that. And since it wouldn't be appropriate nor worth their time to redo them they're given out a bunch of release dates as a substitute. I'd expect around Dec-Feb when we get new Directs again, though I'm not sure the new CEO will do it.
Hopefully not, but no idea.. :/

Probably they are just making longer pause because of Iwata and all.
After recent announcements I don't expecting Direct soon, maybe Oktober-November, or maybe will not have any new Nintendo Direct this year.
At the moment I am divided on the need for Directs.
I like them as a way to compact several new videos into one sitting, but I also feel they downplay big announcements which should be saved for E3 or the likes.
If the reduce the frequency of them or use them to show new footage of old stuff ill be happy.

It's plainly obvious they are scripted. There's a need to get professional crew to shoot and edit the footage. Some added VFX now and then.
Not millions of dollars costly, but considerable enough there's a need to plan for them.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
It's too soon.
I know you guys want your information about video games, but this is bigger than video games or selling a product.
I think internally Nintendo is devastated by Iwata's passing and it will take a long time before it's just "business as usual" again.
The rest of the year in a lot of ways I think is a "lets just get through this" type thing at this point.
It's possible the entire format will be retired, at least for a long time.
