Forums - PC Discussion - Ad Blockers in web browsers, a solution or a problem?

They are a solution, not a problem. They would be a problem if ads were reasonable but often they're not. In fact, they often even contain malware, which means that using adblockers is justified even from a security perspective.

I'm not saying adblockers aren't a problem too, but if I have to choose which one they're more, I say they're a solution. And I don't think annoying your users with ads is a good long-term solution either.

A solution. The adds got out of control (especially with pop ups and flashy adds not to mention malwares, spywares, etc.) and we established control with these.

Now, if its a site we care about we disable it, but block the rest. We are definitly not in the wrong. Adblock is the reaction, not the action. This is why it will be difficult to solve a problem. When one side extremes its positions, its difficult to come back to an understanding. In this case, greed creates problems that then it can't get out of.

Ads are a great thing. I let them play whenever I watch streaming sites like Hulu and YouTube and have ad blocker disabled for those sites. For other sites where ads are unbearably obtrusive I have ad blocker enabled.

This site is the wrong place to be asking that kind of question. I absolutely hate trying to browse it without ad blockers, because it becomes a slow, laggy, messy nightmare of an experience.

However, for sites I frequent that have well-place, non-intrusive ads that don't offend my visual sensibilities or automatically play video, I have no problem disabling my ad-blocking software. I want them to profit.

I use No Script in FireFox for my ad-blocking pleasure.

Spend a bit more time, but I allow certain ads (mainly static images) and have all running scripts blocked.

I hate auto running ads (Audio and Video)

Every time this question comes up, I tell people that NoScript is a bigger danger to sites than AdBlock and any of its varients are. AdBlock can be disabled across an entire domain with a simple click. NoScript has to be disabled site by site, meaning it's more of a pain to constanstly click and figure out with external site is the one loading ads, and even more complicated if you want to allow it on one domain or top-level site, but not the other.

The problem is the are a number of sites that bombard people with a tonne of ads the second the page boots up which is why ad blocking has exploded in the last few years.

I use ad-block with any site. This is the internet, the only place I can actually remove ads -so I'm going to use that ability XD

I was very much against ad blockers until this summer. For some reason, the ads on VGChartz got so out of control that it was almost impossible to read any page here on my phone or tablet, because the ads were constantly resizing my screen, and when I would click to try to close one of those ads, I'd either accidentally click into the ad, cause it to open, or click completely different ad that was sitting right behind it or where the screen resized to next. Also, on my PC, the ads were starting to make my browser completely lockup and crash all the time.

So yeah, I do use Adblock. I do cut out ads from sites now and cost those sites money that most of them deserve. And it's all completely due to this singular site. Thank you, VGChartz, for ruining my experience online so much that I had to change my morals about ad revenue completely. Thank you, VGChartz, for all of the money you are now costing all of the other sites that I visit, too. And for what? You don't even update your charts anymore, so I don't even know the purpose of this site now.

At least it's all worth it so I can get those weekly charts, right?

There is a reason why I use adblock... and that's because some ads are really annoying and pop up on multiple windows.

Being more complicated is a definite, though it allows for maximum flexibility.  Some pages I just allow to run whatever they want (depending on what they are of course) others I specify very specific things (THIS site for example).

I like having as much control over what I am using as possible.
