StarOcean said: Oh god no. Neither. They're in no position to aquire any big dev right now. People are begging for Metroid and Animal Crossing on top of F-Zero and a billion other IPs Nintendo hides in the closet that isn't Mario, Pokemon, or Zelda and are getting nothing. Perhaps if Nintendo changes next gen my opinion will change, but as it stands they don't need any more IPs that they'll just sit on |
If they treated Capcom the way Sega is treating Atlus, they wouldn't be sitting on anything.
Ca$hcom.
Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won
I say that Nintendo should undertake pseudo-merger acquisitions. and in this way obtain Atlus.
Specifically, undergo a kind of combination merger and acquisition with Sega Sammy. Since they own Atlus, Nintendo would get Atlus by this path. By "combination merger and acquisition", what I mean is that Nintendo would be the dominant part of the company, but Sega Sammy investors would be absorbed in, rather than being bought out (obviously not literally, but I think you get what I'm saying).
And then, they can also merge with/acquire a western publisher... maybe Koch Media? Obvious alternatives are Take-Two or Zenimax. These are publishers that typically make games that aren't Nintendo's typical fare... which is part of the point... and are big enough to matter while also being small enough for Nintendo to be able to afford it.
When it comes to Capcom, I think Nintendo's best bet is to go into a big agreement with them. Something along the lines of "we'll fund a heap of the games your people want to make with your IP, but in return, you guarantee that all Capcom games are released on Nintendo systems and are of high quality when released." No need to constrain them to Nintendo-only, but no more DR: Chop-til-you-drop situations, and no more Resident Evil 5 situations.

But on the topic of which one is more likely, Capcom is without a doubt. |
Well if they are for sale Nintendo should absolutely scoop them up. They desperately need more 2nd parties to help with software droughts.
Capcom. Atlus actually still *does* something with most of their stuff. Capcom either doesn't or screws it up. In terms of Atlus and Nintendo, I think they should just secure controlling interest on certain franchises that are already predominantly on their platforms. The core SMT, Etrian Odyssey, stuff like that.

Capcom isn't "for sale". Never has been. They have however dissolved their buy-out defense, but Nintendo doesn't have a buyout defense either anymore, does that mean that Nintendo is for sale?
I would have to go with Capcom. While Atlus are some awesome developers in their own right, Capcom just has a stable of iconic IPs that could fill in some of the "holes" in Nintendo's catalog. Series like RE and Street Fighter could really make Nintendo's lineup have that much more diversity.
