Kinda agree, I thought it was odd that he is just a Mii costume. Somewhat relevant to OP, I know I don't have to buy them but why do I need to pay for characters that were in the previous games (Roy, Lucas, and Mewtwo for some)?

Disagree.  Melee is easily the sharpest, deepest, most competitive, and the best game in the series by far. Roy was okay I guess, Lucina and Dark pit could have been Alt costumes instead of wasting up slots more worthy characters like Rool could have used. 

Honestly Brawl and Smash 4 feel more like mobile spin offs than true Smash

What is it with this obsession with King K Rool with many here on VGC and elsewhere on the internet? I don't get it, what's the deal? I've played Donkey Kong Country as well but I've never developed some deep emotional connection to this character, he's just a throw-away to me. Might as well ask why Wart isn't in Smash Bros.

Now I know you're trolling. King K.Rool is overrated. At least people care about the Fire Emblem characters. When was the last time anyone wanted King K.Rool in a new Donkey Kong game?

I remember many gamers being upset about the Kremlins and KKR not being in Returns.

Rare doesn't own either the kremlins or King K. Rool.  They gave Nintendo the rights to them when they were sold to Microsoft.  I don't know why the kremlins weren't in returns or tropical freeze, but being owned by Microsoft wasn't the reason.  Maybe, they just wanted to use new enemies or something.

Turns out you're right. Dunno how that idea got in my head,  but it did.

I suppose Retro wanted the new DK games to have their own identity.

Same here, I can only guess people fell for the goofy costumes Rare put him in all the subsequent games. But even with all that, I think He'd be a lame edition due to how bland he is besides the goofy costumes.

Sakurai probably wants to save a few popular characters for the next entry. Blowing your whole load in this game isn't a smart idea.

Honestly, I'd rather have all these characters rather than King K. Rool.  Maybe it was because I didn't grow up with him like a lot of you did, but I really just don't like him.

Ugh, Sakurai addressed this once before and wont say it again. Characters like Lucina and Dark Pit dont take nearly the amount of development time like King K Rool since they are clones. It would have no made it a difference if they were alts or their own character because there is no "set" number of slots. So having clones like Lucina didnt change the chances of Rool ever being in the game
