Rare doesn't own either the kremlins or King K. Rool.  They gave Nintendo the rights to them when they were sold to Microsoft.  I don't know why the kremlins weren't in returns or tropical freeze, but being owned by Microsoft wasn't the reason.  Maybe, they just wanted to use new enemies or something.

Turns out you're right. Dunno how that idea got in my head,  but it did.

I suppose Retro wanted the new DK games to have their own identity.
