Hardware: Money goes to the console producers
Software: Money goes to the console producers and third-party studios

Exept for sony, that was losing money with every PS3 they sold for the whole generation.

Think with me, if consoles are usually sold at break even prices, or even lower than production prices, what matters is the software sales! So, the winner of a generation should be the one that sells the most software, not hardware !

And by that logic, xbox 360 won 7th generation !

Going by price it wouldn't be about the quantity of games but the money they made. 5m $60 games > 100m $2 games.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

There's many ways to measure who won, but the most important are based on sales and profits, and for that reason, the Wii easily won.

No. If you want to count profits, you should count them more accurately or prove that they don't need to be counted more accurately.

Oh sorry, it only lost money for 4 years lol XD

And when it was losing money, it lost between 200$ - 300$ per unit, so I´m not sure if earning like 15$ per console later is really profitable for the whole generation. I think it doesnt.

One word... USB loader

That wii sold almost the same amount of games like ps360.. is insane, when we know how easy and smooth it was to pirate that system..

So no.. no matter if you look at consoles.. earnings.. or games outthere.. wii is the absolut winner

Why can't people just accept that the Wii sold the most consoles last gen and won? You don't have to like it, but facts are facts and the fact is that the Wii outsold the other consoles.

I think he was just trying to make it seem like an xbox console actually won something. I don't know but the wii clearly won last gen and was probably the most profitable.

I get what you are saying, but there are a ton of other factors. Because I don't feel like thinking too much right now I will just list a couple.

1. How much more money did Sony make on Blu-ray sales because the PS3 won the format for them, these sales will never be captured with the PS3, but are a huge part of its success.
2. 1st party sales. 3rd parties sales you get a cut(royalty) 1st party sales you get full profit after retail cut.
3. Moneyhatting- if you had to pay out the ass to get a game on your console how many of those sales were just recouping the cost of the moneyhat. For instance, does anyone here thing MS will make any money off of the Rise of the Tomb Raider? Yes it may sell a few million LTD but how much did this cost MS?

there are 3 examples of why a simple Software sold analogy is faulty.

What you mean is selling more stuff means more profits. So the generation winner in the hardware manufacturer's department is the one that made the most profits. So it goes to Nintendo whatever way you look at it. Nintendo made billions in profit, Sony made a loss, MS broke even-ish. But around here we're mostly interested in who sells the most consoles because a) that means better potential software sales, and b) means better potential for exclusive content from 3rd parties, and c) means more likely to be the lead development platfrom which should mean the least buggy game, and in some cases the better performing game.

Nintendo never win. Even when they win. Especially when they win.
